  • Update to FCS 3 – Big Problem

Posted by Andrew Gregg on October 26, 2009 at 7:46 am

    Hi guys,

I just updated to FCS 3 and now all of the previous projects are acting strangely. In one, the video is completely pixelated and reversed (photo attatched 344_picture1.jpg.zip). In another, the video is white.

Needless to say, this is a big problem.

Does anyone know why this is happening? Any help woule be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

Did you do a clean install of your OS and Final Cut Studio 3?

No… is that what needs to be done? I’ve got loads of other software on here. If that’s the only way though, I guess I’ll have to.

    Thanks.

Some people have been able to update their software just fine, but they’re in the minority. All of us recommend that you start from scratch with a clean hard drive and go from there. We have three complete systems with zero issues working that way.

If you have a Mac Pro, simply pick up a new internal harddrive and do the complete install to THAT drive. This way you still have your original installation in case all heck breaks lose AND you don’t have to erase everything first. This allows you to move some preferences and other elements if needed. This is the route we did. We still have our complete Studio 2 installs on another hard drive if we ever needed to switch back to them.

It is highly recommended to do a clean install for each major version of FCP. With that being said, I would not say it’s mandatory. I have been working on a machine for the past 6 weeks that was just upgraded from FCS 2 to 3 (10.5.8) without a clean install. And am currently working with a complex upgraded project file as well and everything has been going fine.

In your situation, have you done all the general troubleshooting steps? Trashed FCP prefs? A white screen can often be RGB setting flipped to Alpha. Have you checked those?

I’ve been completely trouble free since upgrading. I did a FCS removal first, not a complete system wipe, then installed FCS 3

At the very least (this worked for us), get a hold of a copy of FCP Remover. Its free software and it will remove FCS completely (except the plugins). Then, uninstall any video hardware card software like an AJA or Blackmagic. Restart your computer, zap the PRAM, reset your permissions and then install FCS 3.
