Yeah, I know…. But this one was working up until FCS3 came out.
Let me say that when working with ONLY one Motion file on top of a video clip, its great. Renders fast, easy to work with…. BUT, when you add another Motion file for layering, all bets are OFF. It will take about 10 minutes or more just to render a couple of seconds.

That kinda defeats the purpose of the program. You know, its like writing out your video on the first track so that you can add video on another track after reimporting the first track. Makes it hard to change on the fly as it was intended. LiveType never gave us any fits with this… And neither did Motion until FCP 7 came out.

Wait until your project has multiple Motion projects embedded on it. SLOW…..DOWN….
Your projects will almost come to a halt and the infamous beach ball of wait will be your best friend.

Just to give you guys a heads up… I, too, having been having nightmarish experiences with FCP 7 (now 7.0.1), AJA Kona 3 card, and Leopard 10.5.8.
I’ve been in contact with AJA about the issues and we did dig up some programming errors that have been (are being) addressed.
An update to the Kona 3 card should be available sometime this week, according to AJA.

Its not much better without using Qmaster, either… The Send to Compressor is the best option. If you get that far…

Yeah… That’s kinda the conclusion I was headed towards. I was just hoping there might be an easier way.
By the way, for its worth… I grew up on After Effects but now use Motion because its easier for simple effects and text with effects.

This is why I’m in Motion…
At the moment, I have a set of concentric circles from a Particle Emitter effect. BUT when I track the effect on the bait, the beginning of the effect follows and the decaying circles do not follow. They kinda trail all around making the effect look messy. I really need for all of the circles to follow the bait.

Rendering out of Motion can create lots of files that you constantly replace. Anyways… This was a selling point of Apple’s a few years ago that made Motion so attractive. Marketing gimmick, I guess.

Well, its OK when you send to Compressor for one-off client DVDs. But if your timeline has lots of graphics, you’ll spend lots of time re-rendering in Compressor. This is another feature that almost works.

Mine have been occurring with multiple layers of Motion files on top of ProRes422 1080i60 video. Its a commercial for a big client. Outputting it has been somewhat of a nightmare. My only option is to completely forego the Share function and do a standard Quicktime output then compress for web in Compressor.
