Yeah… that’s what I’ve heard but my ref is already set to Free Run and I still get the audio crackle every once in a while.

Ok, guys… I talked with AJA tech support and I did get a response. I reseated the Kona2 card and reseated the cables to the K-Box. Now, everything seems to work. I guess I just had a little gremlin stuck in the card somewhere. As for the tech support, yeah, this time they came through but I have stumped them on the audio crackle problem that I am having. The only thing that I could wish for now is HDV support from AJA. Apple’s version has somtething to be desired.

I’m using a PDW-1500 XDCAM machine. Yes, it works on the AJA IO but no I have not been able to hook up another machine to the Kona2. The only other machine I have is a Sony UVW-1800 that is wired into a rack so removing it is no small task. I’ve tried changing cables, I’ve hooked up the machine to and AJA IO (which it works just fine), and I looked to see if there was a setting in the Kona2 Control Panel – nada!
And yes, to answer the next question. I have made sure that the machine is in its 9-pin RS-422 mode instead of i-Link. No, I haven’t tried tech support yet because they are slow to respond and I figured somebody out there might have seen this with all the expertise that is available here.Like I said before, its not keeping me from working but its annoying to keep switching the machine from 9-pin to i-Link mode. Well, that is until we get a HDCAM machine sometime in the near future.

After playing with it for the past few days. I noticed that the sync on mine is already set to Free Run and I still get the crackling noise. I don’t know but its annoying when you have a client in house and have to appoligize for the noise. Usually have to just stop my program, then start playing it again and its fine. Its weird!

One word of warning… If you do plan to purchase the Flip4Mac MXF plugin, make absolutely for sure that you shoot in IMX 50 only. FCP cannot handle IMX 30 or 40 very well at all. We shot our first 10 shows in IMX 40, so at the moment, we have to digitize SDI using IMX 50 and DVCPRO50 codecs. And, oh yeah… PowerMac G4s don’t handle IMX very well at all either. I’ve been rather disappointed by all this.

Well, that’s an easy question to answer. LCD monitors all have an optium setting. For the Apple 23″, its 1920×1200. Anything less than that will be possibly blocky or jittery.

Have you checked to see if your RS-422 connection is OK? In the Log and Capture window, it should tell you if your machine is communication is working properly. I get the same error when my XDCAM deck is set to i-Link instead of 9-pin RS-422. And you might want to check if you have a RS-422 compliant cable. A standard 232 cable will not work.
Here’s another idea. Do you have the newest drivers from AJA?

Let me say that these cameras and decks do work as intended. No, they are not professional level equipment like they are marketed but they do a fine job for the cost. Another thing to think about. FCP 5.02 dosn’t do HDV very well at all. Yes, it works but its clumsy at best. And yes, you do have to still have a capture card like the Kona2 or Blackmagic, if not for capture, then for monitoring.
My best suggestion is to purchase one of these cards and an HDV to HD-SDI converter box (such as Convergent Desgin’s HD-Connect LE) and capture as DVCPRO HD or 10-bit Uncompressed. The quality will be better and you can mix it with anything HD. HDV is fine BUT its not compatible with anything but itself. We found out the hard way. At the moment, we are using it as a down converted DV signal – component video thru the AJA IO LA. That works great but its not the best quality down converted video. The nice thing is that we can do HDV quality video when ever we want.
My tru feelings are that Sony and Apple need to get together and solve this speed bump out.

I agree completely. The Mac is the most stable system when it comes to the Internet. I have two macs at my company and have NEVER had an attack on either. All your IT guys need is a hardware firewall in place and that will protect you just fine. Anti-Virus… I don’t know about that either. If your company has an excellent anti-virus program on all the PCs then there is no reason for you to have it on your macs. Viruses are platform dependant. PC viruses cannot hurt your mac and vice versa.

Hey… if FCP were perfect, Apple wouldn’t have anything to do except bulid computers. I’m an old Media100 guy myself and yes, there are features of M100 that I liked too that aren’t in FCP. BUT… there are many, many more features that FCP offers over M100. If we as editors keep expressing our opinions about products to these companies, they will eventually incorporate these features into their products. I’d like to see a way to print out my Browser window for my records but I can live without it. Hey guys… can M100 edit on muitple video tracks (more than 2)? Can you composite your video right on your timeline in M100? Can you import Photoshoop files with layers into multiple video tracks? NOPE! Media100 had a time and purpose. That time is now gone, so let’s get on with business in the real world of FCP.
