Kona2 machine control

I’m using a PDW-1500 XDCAM machine. Yes, it works on the AJA IO but no I have not been able to hook up another machine to the Kona2. The only other machine I have is a Sony UVW-1800 that is wired into a rack so removing it is no small task. I’ve tried changing cables, I’ve hooked up the machine to and AJA IO (which it works just fine), and I looked to see if there was a setting in the Kona2 Control Panel – nada!
And yes, to answer the next question. I have made sure that the machine is in its 9-pin RS-422 mode instead of i-Link. No, I haven’t tried tech support yet because they are slow to respond and I figured somebody out there might have seen this with all the expertise that is available here.

Like I said before, its not keeping me from working but its annoying to keep switching the machine from 9-pin to i-Link mode. Well, that is until we get a HDCAM machine sometime in the near future.

have you check the deck to know the 422 is working? ( try slaving it to the beta deck)

and I would give tech support a call, it usually only takes a couple of hours at most for them to get back to you.
there are only so many tech guys at AJA.

I with Gary, tech support gets back to me within a few hours at most.

But first what device control presets have you chosen?

I have found that when we are using Firewire to control the deck we somtimes forget to reset the device control and protocol.

I ASSUME that you manually went into the Audio/Video Setting, and looked at the 4th tab – the VTR control settings, and made sure that Kona 2 RS422 was checked. As you probably know, in this menu, you can be using the Kona 2, and change where your VTR control comes from – you can select the AJA I/O, you can select Firewire, you can select a damn Keyspan adaptor if you set it up in the menus. I hope you are not assuming that it automatically starts to work. PLEASE confirm with us that you have checked your menu’s in the Audio/Video setting, and that Kona 2 RS422 has a check mark next to it.

The tech support at AJA has never been slow to respond to any of my needs. I generally have always been able to speak directly to Rudy and/or Clark for over the phone support.

Considering my personal experience dealing with the poor quality of tech support from other companies I consider AJA tech support to be the peak of customer service.

Ok, guys… I talked with AJA tech support and I did get a response. I reseated the Kona2 card and reseated the cables to the K-Box. Now, everything seems to work. I guess I just had a little gremlin stuck in the card somewhere. As for the tech support, yeah, this time they came through but I have stumped them on the audio crackle problem that I am having. The only thing that I could wish for now is HDV support from AJA. Apple’s version has somtething to be desired.

Walter is correct – go into your Kona control panel – bet it’s in Video In, instead of Free Run, or External Ref. The crackle goes away when you get it off Video In.

Yeah… that’s what I’ve heard but my ref is already set to Free Run and I still get the audio crackle every once in a while.
