I have had a similar situation and there is no easy way of doing this BUT this is the only solution that I had. Dump you converted footage to tape and then digitize that footage using your tape so that you have an archive and something that Media Manager will recognize. I agree with you… There are times when you only have a Quicktime file and being able to keep track of it thru Media Manager would be nice. Anyway… My solution is not the best by any means but its the only option for your situation.

Well… Thax is right…. If its clipped, you’re toast. But you can improve it a little in Soundtrack Pro. Just play around and you can normalize you levels at a lower more comfortable output level.

By the way, you could have saved half of you money by purchasing the AJA HD10A which converts you analog component video to HD-SDI and then you can use your firewire for machine control and audio. It’s much cheaper and works perfectly.

Hey gang… It seems like everybody is making this HDV thing a little too difficult. Yes, I know its a bastard format that FCP has real trouble working with but if you do purchase the converter box, the whole process becomes a whole lot easier.
I was just like you guys… pulling my hair out wishing for a better alternative to the HDV crap – not the video but the way FCP handles it. Sony HDV has some really awesome video quality and I am really impressed how it looks – for the money, that is. Finally, I convinced my boss we needed something to bridge the gap. I purchased an AJA HD10A so that I can convert my analog component video to a useable format that I can convert into any codec for easier editing. I then use my firewire as machine control and get my audio thru the firewire. And now, all of my problems are gone.
By the way, I am using the AJA Kona 2 as my capture card and downconverted HDV to SD video is awesome looking.

Did you check your render settings? Look under the Sequence settings and look at your render settings… Is it set to norrmal? If so, set it to Best.

Are you guys by any chance running MacOS 10.4.6? If so, you’ll need to download the full update and run it because the version you get from Software Update has problems that the full download does not.

Yes, you can use Compressor to convert the footage for you. BUT, that will take some serious time to complete. You best option is the hardware converter like the AJA HD10A, it converts HDV to HD-SDI so that you can digitize in any HD format. I have to say that the footage looks absolutely awesome.
It sounds like this is going to be something in your future that will be your mainstay… So, the investment into the AJA HD10A is very small compared to the time invested in the conversion using Compressor.

All good suggestions… BUT Is your DV deck and AJA IO on the same firewire bus or card? Any AJA products must be on its own firewire card or bus. Meaning, that if your DV deck is hooked up to the Mac, then you need a firewire card installed into a PCI slot so that you can hook up the AJA IO. This is a requirement!

I agree with David… I’ve done this a few times in the past and it is a field reversal issue. Check your timeline and check your properties of your clips, one of them is reversed.

Did you setup your machine to output DV? Did you set your iLink to downconvert to DV? You need to set your machine to DV mode on the iLink as well as the video downconvert otherwise it tries to see an HDV machine outputing to DV which according to FCP doens’t jive.
