Sounds like a corrupted project file. Can you still open it on you MacBook Pro?
What versions of FCP do you have on your computers? I hope they are the same versions. Because you can’t open a 5.1.2 file on a 5.1.1 machine, and vice versa.
If your project is corrupted, that’s not a real problem. Just remove your media drive, start up FCP and open your project. Create a new project and copy everything from your old project to the new one. This happens every once in a blue moon.

Thanks, Walter. I was hoping that you might have seen the same issues. BUT I am happy that you have not.
Let me ask…. Are you running on all of the current verions of the software? How about OS 10.4.8? FCP 5.1.2? Did you run software update and update all of it at the same time?
Sorry to ask all of this, but I’m trying to find a common denominator here.

There is one thing different… I’m using a ATTO 41ES. Hmmmm… I wonder if that has something to do with this. Are you running a TerraBlock system?

update to 10.4??”I understand you completely. To answer your question, do all of the above. The graphics card needs to be updated ONLY if you are planning to use Motion with it. Otherwise, don’t spend a whole lot of money on a new card. More RAM always helps. AND I would suggest that you do update to the latest version of OSX. I’m using 10.4.8 on a Dual 1 gig QuickSliver 2002 (now, my DVD encoding staion) and it works just fine.
And most importantly, UPGRADE FCP to 5.1! Its only $49 until the end of the year. After that, it will be $199.

I just got my new Mac Pro this past Thursday, and its the same as yours with the exception that I purchased it with 7 gig of RAM (of which I had to remove all but 2 gig). We are using the ATTO Celerity card with this one connected to a TerraBlock.
Are you using it with the Kona 3 card? If so, can you tell me your slot configuration.
The reason I ask… My system doesn’t seem very stable at the moment and I have ATTO and Facilis Tech looking into my problem. Here’s the problem. After FCP 5.1.2 came out, I updated my systems to it since we use the XDCAM system (SD & HD). Well, when I got in my new Mac, I installed the ATTO card drivers and reconfigured my memory and restarted it. My Terrablock drives come up just fine and I have full access to them. But here’s the real problem. When I open a HD timeline (specifically a DVCPRO HD 720p timeline) and play it back, I get dropped frames, the audio looses sync, and I hear pops and clicks in the audio.
I’ve reinstalled the drivers. I’ve booted from non-updated backup drives. I’ve called tech support at ATTO and Facilis Technology. AND everybody is stumped with this one. Yes…. I know… There will be a new driver for the ATTO card in November BUT I was hoping to use this system now. Can you help me with some info on yours.

I have been XDCAM for the past year now, and its awesome BUT getting it into FCP has always been area pain. The real problem with the XDCAM Transder software is that you still have to change the names of your clips and log any other info that you need to organize the footage.
So….. I tend to just use the old reliable method – Log & Capture. Now, if I need to make copies of programs or dump commercials to my system for integration, then the transfer software is the perfect solution. The other isssue is that camera guys don’t use the camera to mark clips and therefore you’ll end up with a file that is 10 min long and your clip is the last 30 seconds. Yeah, I know that you can do this in the transfer software BUT its just as easy as log and capture.
And then again…. I’ve been in the business for the last twenty years and making an old dog do new tricks is tough at best!
So…. what’s the lesson? You can’t off-line with XDCAM and hope to online with it UNLESS you rip the proxies off of the disc and that’s not supported in FCP just yet.

I’m with Walter. Let ProMax build your system. Talk with Jason Checketts, he’s the Senoir Sales Manager with ProMax. They don’t ship until its right! They have supreme customer service and well worth the money.
Just only thing to be aware of… We just installed a Mac Pro with 7 gig of RAM and connected it to a TerraBlock with 6 TB of storage. The ATTO Celerity FC card that goes into the Mac Pro, it doesn’t have stable driver yet. ATTO says the final release will be in November. So, needless to say…. Mine will have to collect some dust before I can use it. Some people are having luck, just not me… 🙁

Well, after removing 5 gig of memory to just leave 2 gigs (which by the way…. SUCKS), I tried my system again. Still the skips and pops are still there and now it seems worse.
It amazes me how when you contact hardware manufacturers and ask it their hardware is compatible with the new Mac Pro, they say, “Sure!”. Well, I should have known that ATTO would drop the ball on us. They did it years ago in the old Media100 days, and their practice still is SLOW DEVELOPMENT. “Why do it now, when later is better” – that is the ATTO motto.
Frustrating to get in a new Mac Pro and can’t use it all for another month! Figures!

Ok… Let me ask. What capture card do you have?
If you have the new Kona 3, I’d work totally in DVCPRO HD 24p and then downconvert via the capture card to your tape machine.

Well, yeah…..
You’re trying to mix apples and oranges when you try to edit with 25 and 35 mb/s XDCAM HD. The same holds true with the standard XDCAM. Think of it this way… why can’t you edit 29.97 video on a 23.98 timeline? Its the same concept.
The only way of dealing with this issue (problem) is to log & capture the old way. I learned of this when we first got our XDCAM stuff last year. The first few shows were shot in 40 mb/s and then we found out that FCP couldn’t handle the bitrate at that time. So we had to change to 50 mb/s and everything was fine.
Oh well, new technologies bring new troubles.
