I’m looking to buy a Mac Pro. I’m thinking of buying the base system from apple, then going to a place like newegg for ram and hard drives. Any thoughts on reliable brands for the Mac? I’m moving over from PC, so I have no idea where to begin. Thanks so much.

The only RAM I would recommend is from Other World Computing and Crucial. Crucial doesn’t have it yet, but will shortly. The RAM must have the heat sinks on it to perform correctly so only buy the RAM from Apple, Crucial or OWC.

Hard drives you can get anywhere. Macmall.com, BHPhoto.com, promax.com

If you’re building your first FCP system you’re probably setting yourself up for a lot of headaches. I always suggest letting a VAR build your first system. ProMax built my first system 5 years ago and that was the best decision I ever made. http://www.promax.com

Building an FCP system is not just about buying a computer and the software, especially with the new Mac Pro’s. It needs to be configured correctly or you won’t get the performance you’re expecting.

Walter, with your experience… what do you typically do to your FCP configurations?

Also, did you get your Mac Pro yet? If so, please comment… is it ready to displace your QUAD G5 suite?

    Thanks,

    Robert

I’m with Walter. Let ProMax build your system. Talk with Jason Checketts, he’s the Senoir Sales Manager with ProMax. They don’t ship until its right! They have supreme customer service and well worth the money.

Just only thing to be aware of… We just installed a Mac Pro with 7 gig of RAM and connected it to a TerraBlock with 6 TB of storage. The ATTO Celerity FC card that goes into the Mac Pro, it doesn’t have stable driver yet. ATTO says the final release will be in November. So, needless to say…. Mine will have to collect some dust before I can use it. Some people are having luck, just not me… 🙁
