[Tom Wolsky] “What do you have set for Effects Handling in System Settings?”

It all set to Final Cut Pro.

[Tom Wolsky] “I can’t reproduce this on a 17″ MacBook Pro.”

You proabably won’t. I have an ATTO fibre channel card, an AJA Kona 3, and an ATI X1900 XT video card. All of them have their latest drivers installed.

I have to say that editing on a MacPro with my configuration has been a real nightmare to this point. Oh well, that does happen with a new platform.

November 14, 2006 at 8:21 pm in reply to: OT: HD Cam 10bit or DVC HD?

Well, Tom… I use DVCPRo HD all of the time and I haven’t seen any issues with editing. It’s goreous! And the file sizes are much smaller.

I’m sure that if you take this to some engineer to look at… he might just be able to pick it out. But to the average everyday view… not at all. There are lots of programs that air today that were shot and edited in DVCPro HD.

Here’s an idea for you. Take a 10-bit uncompressed clip and drop it into Compressor and convert it to DVCPro HD. Bring that back into FCP on a DVCPro 1080 23.98 timeline and see for yourself. Try adding a title to it and rendering it out.

[Tom Matthies] “I suspect that 10bit uncompressed, while the best in quality, could be overkill in this situation.”

As for this… you’re right. UNLESS you are doing lots of heavy graphics and roto animations throughout, it a little bit of overkill. Your rotoscope that you have to do, render it out using the Animation codec and import it into FCP as such. You’ll have to render, but so what… it will look great.

Maybe Walter and Gary could chime in… I know that they both use this everyday in their work.

November 14, 2006 at 7:48 pm in reply to: FCP 5.1.2 Bug on a MacPro

[Tom Wolsky] “You mean on the track above it?”

    Yeah…..

Maybe I need to speak more plain…

Track 1 has a video clip. Track 2 has a graphic from LiveType on it.

If you apply any effect like Color Corrector 3-way, the render should be deleted and need to be re-rendered. But it doesn’t. If you double click on the clip again, the Canvas window is updated, but the render file still isn’t deleted and your timeline (sequence) isn’t updated UNTIL I move the clip up a track or over to the left or right and placed back in it original location. In this case, all I have to do is move the LiveType file up one track and back down, then the timeline (sequnce) is updated and needs to be rendered.

[Tom Wolsky] “This may be a problem specific to Kona users.”

No… This is not a Kona issue since the Kona doesn’t write specific files, just plays specific codec files.

Oh, one more thing… I also have a PPC Dual 2.7 with 6.5 gig of RAM with the same software, and it does not occur on this system at all.

November 14, 2006 at 7:38 pm in reply to: FCE Wants Old Project, Won’t Start Up.

You can change this in your preferences, you know… Just look under “User Preferences” and on the first screen you’ll see a selection box for “Open last project on application launch”. Just uncheck that. That will solve you problem.

As for the others… Like Tom said…. check your drive and make sure that your drive is not formatted journaled and is formatted as Mac OS Extended.

And you might want to trash your preferences.

November 13, 2006 at 5:36 pm in reply to: ATTO FC card and Boot Camp?

For as long as I can remember, ATTO has always been behind the curve when it comes to development. Almost always you can count on them to be at least one year behind. And their offense is…. “Well, who else are you going to use?” If you are planning to do HD video, then ATTO is the only “guy” on the block that can do this thru fibre channel at the moment. Apple will be the only real competitor, but they are slow to develop also.

November 10, 2006 at 9:47 pm in reply to: HDV PROBLEM AGAIN… PLEASE HELP!

I’ve been seeing this problem on my PPC Mac with FCP 5.1.2 using DVCPro HD. I’ve had to to happen lots of times since yesterday. Hmmmmm…. I’m starting to think this version is unstable. Or it could be OS 10.4.8 or Quicktime 7.1.3. I don’t know….

Call Boris and let them know this. It sounds like the gave you the wrong download. You might have accidentally downloaded the PPC version.

  • Check with ATTO and see if they have a new driver for your SCSI card.

  • It sounds like somewhere there is a driver or program that is hogging your resources, thereby, taking away priority from your RAID.

OR…. there could be a problem with your SCSI card. Let me guess…. its an ATTO card, right?

I can’t answer this for sure BUT it seems as if there is a driver conflict between ATTO, the OS 10.4.8, and Quicktime 7.1.3. I’m having a similar issue with a MacPro dual 3.0, 2 gig of RAM (ATTO issue #1), ATTO FC-41ES fiber channel card, Mac OS 10.4.8, Quicktime 7.1.3, and AJA Kona 3 capture card.

November 10, 2006 at 3:39 pm in reply to: fcp to shake

I have extremely little experience with Shake but from what I can tell is that Shake uses your entire clip, not just the in and out points.

Ok…. Let me explain. If you have a clip that is 20 seconds long and your in-point is say 5 second into the clip and your out point is one second from the end, that leaves you with a clip in your sequence of 14 seconds BUT when you “Send to Shake”, it sends the full 20 second clip. At that point you will have to adjust Shake for the correct in-point or start frame.

Yeah, I know…. it sounds complicated but that’s Shake. Shake is extremely complicated and has an extremely steep learning curve. I guess you have to expect that from the best compositing program on the market. Shake was built straight from Unix code and works in a simplistic way when is comes to importing clips.

The only way to make this simple on you is to export your clip from in-point to out-point as a complete file and use that in your sequence and “Send to Shake” from there. That will make your job easier until you learn Shake.
