  • Video is shifting (horizontally) & quickly then FCP quits or beachballs forever

Posted by Sean Harris on November 10, 2006 at 3:26 pm

G4, Dual 1.42 w/2g ram, OSX 10.4.8, QT 7.1.3, Latest drivers for KONA SD card, & for Medea RTR 320 array, I have reinstalled OS, I have cleared and zero array, It has plenty of disk space. I have verified all drives and ran a test on the Medea’s drives (it tested with good speed). There just seems to be a communication issue that makes the drive stop working or work too hard then FCP quits or beachballs. I have a show to output, but I cannot output from the timeline without dropping frames and I cannot render to a self-contained QT without a freeze. Even when I do get the sequence to play from the timeline, the video will, periodically, shift horizontally. Please help.

It sounds like somewhere there is a driver or program that is hogging your resources, thereby, taking away priority from your RAID.

OR…. there could be a problem with your SCSI card. Let me guess…. its an ATTO card, right?

I can’t answer this for sure BUT it seems as if there is a driver conflict between ATTO, the OS 10.4.8, and Quicktime 7.1.3. I’m having a similar issue with a MacPro dual 3.0, 2 gig of RAM (ATTO issue #1), ATTO FC-41ES fiber channel card, Mac OS 10.4.8, Quicktime 7.1.3, and AJA Kona 3 capture card.

Atto it is. I feel stuck in the middle of a bad dream. The system was quitting when I was rendering a QT movie from Motion. So, I tried to open the Motion file directly in FCP then render…immediate crash.

Where do I begin? I have 58 hours into the work of trying to fix this problem (so far) just so I can work on a paying gig.

Check with ATTO and see if they have a new driver for your SCSI card.

I did as you said, and the Atto guy talked and talked to me. He was very helpful, but I had everything in place as he thought it should be.

I am going to install the OS and Apps on another disk. Start up and run FCP from there. Maybe my drive is got some hidden crazy crap. (SHCC)

    Hi,
To better troubleshoot, what is the exact model number of the Medea unit? What is the firmware you are running on the Medea? What is the Atto scsi controller model and driver Atto verified was installed? What slot is the Scsi controller in? Have you been in Hyperterminal on a PC with the Null modem cable to troubleshoot? Let me know to help resolve.
