Yes. H.264 is a seriously processor intensive codec to encode. Anytime you are using this it will take some time. BUT, the quality of your final product will be fabulous.

If you can afford the $3500 price tag, go for it! The AJA IO HD would be an awesome piece to add to your arsenal. It will do everything you need and them some…
The advantage for you is the fact that ProRes422 is built into this box. Meaning all of the processing necessary will be done in the IO HD, not your computer. That is an awesome feature to have because it you don’t have a Mac Pro Quad or Octo Core system, ProRes422 will choke. The IO HD solves this problem for people who don’t have these computers. Besides, you’ll be able to do ANY video codec except Uncompressed with this box – SD and HD. And if you have a Kona card, the Uncompressed is taken care of with that card.
My suggestion… bite the bullet and get an AJA IO HD. It will be your savior!

Well, Mike… I only suggest this if you are using HDV with other formats like we do. Personally, I don’t like editing in HDV because of the processor intensive nature of the codec. Its harder on a system than ProRes422.
We have a mixture of HDV and XDCAM HD, so its easier for us to edit in DVCProHD or ProRes422. Therefore, my Sony HVR-M10U is connected component to an AJA HD10AVA converter box to SDI into my Kona 3. And it works great. Besides, I’m an old school video guy that has gotten used to log and capture because of the amount of control you have over your project.
There’s no wrong way or right way of doing this. If you are just solely HDV, then capture firewire and edit HDV, then write back to HDV for your final product. The Kona card will purely be a monitoring output. Many people edit HDV this way everyday.

Are you editing in a different codec than DV? If so, why? If all of your footage is DV, edit DV. If you have lots of graphics, capture all of your footage using a capture card like AJA or Blackmagic using whatever codec of your choice.

Check to see if your Blackmagic has a new set of drivers for you. Walter and I are using Kona 3s on our Mac Pro system, so we are able to do anything in ProRes 422.

But this has been a big debate here because firewire is a fully digital signal and component is an analog signal. I know that Walter would say use firewire. That’s fine, too. It all depends on your particular workflow that you are used to using. Neither is wrong and both are right. So, its totally up to you what you want to use.
That is the awesome part of using FCP! Its up to you on what you want to do. That’s a freedom that I welcome wholly!

Mike, you use the firewire for machine control only. Unless you want to use the deck for DV video then firewire is your best bet.

Any advice is appreciated.”First, you need to download the Sony Transfer Software. This will give your Mac the ability to see the deck and the software to transfer your footage into FCP. Secondly, you need to set your deck to FAM mode for firewire to work with the software.
If you are wanting to just “Log and Capture” DV, you still need to download the Sony Transfer software to get the proper drivers needed by the Mac. After you install this, just set your machine to AV/C mode and capture like any DV deck.

I have found that if you export your entire program to a Quicktime file then use Compressor to compress your file, it will work.
I’ve gotten that error many times and always when exporting straight from the sequence.
