Ok, you can’t animate AE blending modes, but you can use BCC composite which has blending modes, and guess what, you can animate them. I really love this filter as it allows you to mix between two blending modes creating some pretty nifty combinations…you can also mix to original effectively removing the blending modes.

Lower the resolution of the monitor…you will lose screen real-estate, but your text will be bigger.

I always found that when going back to Liquid (Blue). I found, for the cleanest renders, that the way to go is to go to an uncompressed AVI, or QT Animation and then let your Chrome do the re-render upon import. It sucks as it is more time consuming, but I found the results to be better.

If the fingers of the hand don’t move much, then you could create a mask on a solid, then track the hand and apply the data to the solid’s position…next you would use the solid as a track matte for the toy….would still take some adjusting, but probably less. Not sure if you can apply tracking data directly to a mask, never have tried, so thatis why I suggest the solid.

Again, it all depends on the complexity…it is kind of like asking how long it will take to drive there…drive where ??? And at what speed….

Particular work can take quite a while to perfect the look. Text animation can be quick, but if you are like me you will add layers etc and before you know it your simple text animation has 3 nulls and 15 layers of text. Backgrounds can be quite quick if they don’t have to precise….3d camera moves can be very complex, and I like to take my time with them. It makes me laugh when directors ask for me this, but huff and puff when I take a while to adjust the path…I hate seeing badly adjusted motion paths on a camera.

From the sounds of this, it prolly isn’t a weeks work, but definately 3days+

What scares me is the 5 hours of footage….you would need to scan that to get your selects, so look at a couple of hours there.

Next is the edit. If the edit is to music, this obviously takes longer…For the type of work I do, I would put this at about 4 hours (I edit sports promos), but it could be quicker or longer depending on type of work you need to do.

For color-correction, well I am quite quick here, so I would say about an hour (maybe less), but that could change if the footage was bad.

For treatment, well this is pretty vague….are you going to be masking ??? are you going to use multiple windows at the same time ??? If it is just a color treatment, then this would be rather quick, but it could take longer depending on your skill level etc.

As for effects, what exactly are you looking for ??? transitions ??? etc…

Without seeing what the client wants it is hard to know….It sounds like a days job, but it could be more or less depending on what they want.

I bring the footage into AE, then set the footage not to de-interlace. Next I create a 23.976 comp and drop the footage into that. I then apply the Magic Bullet frames filter and it de-interlaces for me. Next I add a look, then render out to 29.97 adding 3:2 pulldown….this now imports into Avid with the pulldown already applied.

I have not seen this.

I have a workspace for A/B editing and have it set to a keyboard shortcut (all of my modes are set to shortcuts)…I have not experienced the frames vs timecode issue.

Also, the only time my machine Symphony Nitris) changes output settings are when there is no machine connected, or there is no signal present….otherwise it always stays locked on either HD SDI or SDI….at home I work in a tapeless manner, so I have not experienced this.

Sorry not to get back into the conversation earlier… I like to use DNX for the aforementionned reasons, also when I want to go out to After Effects I can use a QT reference…my experience with AE and DVCPROHD have not been all that great.

I also edit on Nitris classic (Symphony) at work and will get into DNXHD as soon as possible to take advantage of the hardware. I also edit at home on MC SOFT and have found that DNX plays beautifully on my system in full res mode.

I had a project last year where I edited 2 30 min shows for the client. The show was in French, which I speak fluently, but the French language is full of rules when writing. Anyway, the client sent me some translations, those translations were then corrected by the director and handed off to me. I copy and pasted the text into the title program I was using and away we went.

The 2 shows aired and all was good. Then the shows were sold to another network to air. This network found errors on the translations and asked for changes…also i had to reformat the timing of the show. Luckily I had backed up the project, including media to an external drive.

I explained to the client that this would take time. I also apologized for the translation errors, but then I explained that i copy-pasted their text…I also mentionned that he, the producer and the director had seen the show, and noone had seen the errors.

He was very understanding and paid full rate. I explained that restoring that backups and relinking also took time (which it did, some backups didn’t restore fully), but I also explained that i had kept the backups on my drive without “renting” the space…I suggested that if he wanted to be sure, he could provide me a drive and I would backup to that.

He was very happy with the work that I did for him. He is a good client and continues to be so. He has called fo me work after the corrections, and I suspect he will.

If the mistakes would have been user error (mine), and caught in a reasonable amount of time, then I would have made the changes on my own time, but that was not the case.

After 4 years, as mentionned, this becomes a new project and the client must pay the hourly wage….also as mentionned, if it is a good client then you could do it for free, but that is opening a dangerous door…one that leads to the phrase, “can you do me a favour”.
