I know Arnie’s rig because I shoot with it already. It is very steady and I would definitely give him a call at Aerial Exposures.

Easy fix to get rid of play in Panasonic plate is to add 2 washers 1 or 2mm thick. They would go on the 2 philips screws underneath grey plastic piece in the back of the plate. This improves stability a lot. It may be acceptable then or just go ahead and buy Chrosziel plate that pulls down and locks camera.

February 17, 2006 at 3:15 am in reply to: portable HD-SDI downconverter to composite?

    Hi,

AJA converter as great as it is does not convert Varicam HD signal to PAL signal. AJA 10MD converts many formats but it does not convert Varicam’s system frequency 60Hz or 59.94Hz to 50Hz at which PAL operates.
You may look into Miranda more expensive onboard converter that will give you downconverted PAL signal and DV output.

    Hi,

Solution for hot swapping FireWire cable and not frying FW board is to use FW adapter cable that does not have conduct power but just signal. This is working very well at AbelCine Tech and each deck we rent has that adapter.

January 8, 2006 at 7:29 pm in reply to: PCMCIA Hard Disk Drives?

[gary adcock] “[Mariusz] “This is interesting statement since you can not record that much video on those cards.”

    why ?”

On 4GB P2 card you can record 10min in 720/24pN mode. In my opinion this is not much.
P2 Store is hard disk, computer has hard disk and both are prone to failures. In example 2 years ago I broked my laptop motherboard in my baggage and week ago one of my 3 FireWire drives failed. So far all my tapes are fine.
I am happy with safety of P2 cards but I am waiting for archiving solution like Blu-Ray. Otherwise I want to record to system with redundant drives.
My point was that HDD’s are almost unavoidable now as most economical and easiest way to transfer or store video from P2 cards.

This is interesting statement since you can not record that much video on those cards.
Where you going to transfer that footage from P2 cards? Even Panasonic is offering you P2 Store (Hard Disk Drive)
Unless you go directly to AJ-HD1200A tape deck you will have to transfer to hard disk at some point. There will be Blu-Ray soon and other technology to archive footage rather than hard disk.
This is completely different workflow but now hard disks are pretty much unavoidable and cheapest way to go.

October 3, 2005 at 12:19 pm in reply to: how to clean video shot with +6dB gain?

    Walter,

What noise reduction filters you had in mind?
I do not have AE or Boris Continuum mentioned above unfortunately. I do have a Photoshop , FCP 5 Studio, SketchUp and Keynote. That together would be all my pro applications. Can I use these tools to somehow reduce a grain?
I will try crushing blacks, maybe go for b/w and I will try Kurt’s deGrain filter later today. Thanks a lot for all replies.

Firewire 800 and 400 is backward compatible.
I did not say 4pin to 6pin cable. I was talking about adapter cable that has both 6 pin ends but power is not going through. It is called FireWire port isolator and does not pass bus power.
1200A does not need power through Firewire and most of the time that is the reason why they are damaged boards.

    Hi,

I am using 400 speed FW drives almost everyday with AJ-HD1200A DVCPRO HD deck and it works OK.
800 speed drive is better because it is faster and like Gary said it is on different bus. There is a Belkin FW adapter cable that goes FW400 to FW800 and thus it is possible to use 400 speed drives on 800bus.
Another cable worth to mention is 6pin to 6pin FW adapter retrofit cable that has no power connection inside and prevents burning IEEE1394 board inside deck while hot swapping.
    Regards,
