portable HD-SDI downconverter to composite?
Posted by Chris Kamen on February 16, 2006 at 4:26 amWhat’s the best way to downconvert a HD-SDI signal out of the Varicam to composite PAL using a small portable device? I want to setup a minDV recorder to record the composite signal so that the footage can be quickly and easily edited on a laptop on set….

February 16, 2006 at 11:00 pmYeah – I’ve been looking at the HD10MD.
Can it really do all that? HD 59.94/60 Hz in and NTSC, PAL, out….
What about any devices that go to Firewire? It would be great to hook it up to a laptop direct, rather then having to record on to miniDV first…

February 17, 2006 at 3:15 amHi,
AJA converter as great as it is does not convert Varicam HD signal to PAL signal. AJA 10MD converts many formats but it does not convert Varicam’s system frequency 60Hz or 59.94Hz to 50Hz at which PAL operates.
You may look into Miranda more expensive onboard converter that will give you downconverted PAL signal and DV output.Mariusz

February 19, 2006 at 12:04 amHave you considered how you intend to deal with the timecode?
A better method is to use the standard def SDI and verify if the embedded timecode and audio are retained.
Then you could use a dvcam deck with SDI inputs to record video, audio, and timecode all embedded and in time with each other.

Have you done this before and which tape machine can do this? Does the machine also have firewire? How’s the quality? Thanks for any advice.

February 20, 2006 at 11:26 pmThanks for that Mariusz, with the AJA specs on their website I got the impression that the 10MD could basically convert anything HD to anything SD.
The other option possible with the varicam in NTSC countries is to go HD-SDI into the 1200 deck (or that other hard-drive recording device) and then use the firewire out on that to go to a computer to record in DVCPRO100.
But in PAL countries, Apple has not yet blessed us with a DVCPRO codec that will operate with PAL frequencies. Here’s hoping with the new P2 200 camcorder that they’ll release a PAL codec, because otherwise that camera will be unusable in PAL countries. (correct me if I’m wrong)

Did you ever find a practical cost-effective solution ? I’d be very interested to hear.
I too want to make a low res copy from the camera while reviewing rushes in the field, but it would also be nice to be able to view a small colour non-HD LCD monitor mounted onboard the camera while shooting.
