Walter,
Or better yet, use a Matrox CompressHD ($500) and take advantage of the Mac you already invested in and create real the best quality H.264 Blu-Ray video within Apple Compressor

I second that!
The my MXO2 has really delivered!
I use my HDMI for all my previews. The quality of Matrox’s up and down converts are FANTASTIC!
I recommend it to anyone of my FCP peers!

Jeremy,
I’ve been working with XDCAM EX natively on the timeline with my Matrox MXO2 with NO rendering on my 8core MacPro.
Maybe I can help you figure out what you’ve been doing wrong.
It works flawlessly for me.I bring in my footage, put it on my timeline, edit and while I’m editing I see it on my HMDI monitor as smooth as silk. I can play XDCAM EX straight off my timeline using my Matrox MXO2.
Stay well.

Gary,
WOW!
How can I have missed this news from Matrox!
I assume it will work with my MXO2, right? If what you say is true, this card is a no brainer addition to my workflow.
What about the quality? How does it compare to Compressor? Do I have to take a hit in quality for speed?I’m calling Matrox on Monday for details!!!
These guys at Matrox never stop amazing me…An Artist At Heart.

Steve,
I’ve been using my MXO2 with the native XDCAM workflow just like you would like to do with your AJA box… but it has been working flawlessly for me.
You might want to check out this workflow doc on the Matrox site:https://www.matrox.com/video/en/products/mxo2/sony/
Let me know if you have any questions, I’d be glad to share my findings with you.
Stay well.

Stuart,
I’ve had my MXO2 for a couple of months now and it does everything they said it would… and more. Matrox just released new drivers that give me more features than I was expecting.
I’ve given my opinon on this MXO2 box before, check out my 2 cents at:
https://forums.creativecow.net/readpost/8/1029519Since then, I’ve had nothing but good results from this box. The HD to SD and HD to SD scaling is awesome. The quality out of this box is fantastic.
Matrox support team is equally great. I had a problem, so I thought, (it turned out to be between the keyboard and the chair.. i.e me:) These guys treated me with white gloves! I would recommend the MXO2 to anyone looking for an I/O device for the MacPro or MacBookPro. I just got my MBP and can’t wait to see what I can do with this dynamic duo..Stay tuned.
Good luck with your search.
Stay well.An Artist At Heart.

Marcus,
I seemed to have added my 2 cents to a simalar request not too long ago. Please see my response at :
https://forums.creativecow.net/readpost/8/1029519If you want to ask me specific questions about my personal experience with the MXO2 I would be glad to give you another opinion.
Stay well.

Robert,
I am new to these forums and I am a new Matrox MXO2 user. I am not a moderator like Gary or others.. just fellow artist that has an opinon on technology as well..
Reading Gary’s post..[GARY]”So to answer the question – Yes you do get better quality when you have a card installed, and the most common card in use by pro’s are the Kona’s (I believe that everyone of the FCP forum leaders has at least one kona product)”
I have to wonder whether your question about which hardware is best, can be answered in this (FCP) forum.
Clearly, if Gary is saying that he and fellow moderators are AJA users, they really cannot give you the information that you need.. which is an unbias comparative information…Unfortunately, neither can I as I only have the MXO2.
All I can tell you is what I know. The MXO2 is a great I/O card for my MacPro. And the reason I chose it is that it has virtually all the ins and outs I`ll ever need, and if I ever have to go to my client to show him my work I can bring it with me… (That is once I buy my MBP..) Because I have intentions of buying a MBP in the next few months, I chose MXO2… I can take the I/O on the road.. can’t do that with a card.I hope my opinon helps.. just want to give you another point of view… from one artist to another.
Stay well.

March 29, 2009 at 6:44 pm in reply to: Video Card for MAC when editing RED footage in FCP[Gary Adcock]<i>” Red recommends Kona Cards for a reason.
AJA’s tools handle most of the processes needed in hardware- up, down and cross conversion are always done in hardware everytime.”
….”All of the BMD cards still rely on a fair amount of CPU processing to handle many of the tasks on the card, and somethings like cross-conversion from 720 x1080 they cannot do without rendering.”Gary,
I don’t know if RED recommends Matrox MXO2 or not but it seems to me that it would be able to do the trick. Here is my theory… Take in the RED material via the Reddisc (or Red Drive I`m not quite sure what they call it) Seeing that FCP can eidt the 1K or 2K files all I would need to do is hook up my MXO2 to my MBP and monitor via HDMI in 1080 or in Chris’s case use the MXO2 hardware downscaler and view it on his SD monitor… either way I think Chris has another choice with the MXO2.An Artist At Heart.

Jonah,
I would like to give you another option. My Matrox MXO2 serves me well and I think it can do the trick for you as well. Here is my reasons why:
[Jonah] I’m upgrading my G5 to a macpro next week, so my decklink SP is history. The main thing I can’t get straight is what exactly my limitations would be in terms of monitoring out to a tube sony PVM style monitor.
For an input and output option that will probably give you many years of use I see the MXO2 better than any “cards”. I, like you have a MacPro and use my MXO2 for monitoring to my HDMI output. It comes in handy when I need to edit material from my Sony EX3. The reason why I chose to go with the MXO2 vs a card is that I want to buy a MacBook Pro in a few months, and you can`t stick a card in a MBP 😉
Oh and by the way the analog out of the MXO2 would feed your PVM just beautifully.[Jonah] From what I gather, the Intensity pro is limited to specific codecs that it can output/monitor. So if I had, say, 24p footage I could not monitor. This would include any HD footage that wasn’t in 60fps format and only prores hq.
I don’t have experience with the Intensity pro but I can tell you that the MXO2 has no limitation when it comes to codecs. It works with everything and the best part of it is that it does not force me to work with ProRes. I can use my XDCAM footage natively.
[Jonah] Also, and lastly, does “down converting” mean what I think it means? Can I play HD out to an SD monitor for monitoring purposes only?
That’s exactly what it means. However, beware of the BMD scaling, I’ve been reading the forums and the word on the street is that the quality is poor. The reason I am seeing out there is that BMD decided to use sub par components to meet a low price…
All I can tell you is that I love the quality of the MXO2 downscale. My XDCAM material looks awesome on my old SD monitor.Lastly the reason I decided to go with MXO2 is the need to connect to old legacy equipment won`t go away and I won’t refuse any job that comes my way…
Do yourself a favor check out the MXO2.I hope I was able to help you in your decision process.
Good luck.
