EX1 XDCam Footage in FCP 6.0
Posted by Jared Smith on March 31, 2009 at 3:08 amHey guys,
I have not made the purchase yet of the EX1, but I am trying to cover all the bases. If I buy this camera will I have any trouble using FCP 6.0 with the XDCAM footage?

March 31, 2009 at 2:27 pmIt works fine with FCP. You do need a couple of free plugins from Sony though. It’s also worth noting that due to the long-GOP nature of XDCAM I always render to ProRes or ProRes HQ for final render and output.
I read an article about a JVC camera that is being released around NAB time that records to the XDCAM format, but the files are automatically wrapped for use in FCP. This means that ingesting is literally a case of drag and dropping from the card into your scratch disk. No re-wrapping as you have to do with the Sony XDCAM files. Might be worth looking into as I think it’s about the same price as the EX1, maybe a bit more but it has detachable lenses too, which is a huge plus for a lot of people. It’s called the JVC GY-HM700.

or later.earlier versions are not supported or have issues.

March 31, 2009 at 4:38 pmI just finished my first XDCam project no too long ago, and man it is weird. Be prepared for a lot of waiting and rendering.

March 31, 2009 at 5:59 pmWhat are the specs of the computer(s) you’ll be using? XDCAM EX is a more CPU intensive codec than DVCPro HD, for example, so an older machine that runs DVCPro HD fine will struggle a bit more w/XDCAM EX. W/that being said, we’ve been using an EX1 for nearly a year now on shorter projects (less than 10 minutes) on Mac Pros as well as G5s and have no real complaints.

I’ve been working with XDCAM EX natively on the timeline with my Matrox MXO2 with NO rendering on my 8core MacPro.
Maybe I can help you figure out what you’ve been doing wrong.
It works flawlessly for me.I bring in my footage, put it on my timeline, edit and while I’m editing I see it on my HMDI monitor as smooth as silk. I can play XDCAM EX straight off my timeline using my Matrox MXO2.
Stay well.

May 2, 2009 at 11:47 pmThe new AJA io Express is codec independent and can work with XDCam native.
I don’t work with XDCam that much and prefer AJA products.
