  • AJA-IoHD, Multibridge, MXO2 or Motu V4HD?

I’m currently looking at getting an IO interface to go on a quad core intel mac with Final Cut studio 2 installed. Looking around I’ve drawn up a short list of four possible units above. Ideally, i’d like to be able to use it occasionally with a macbook to for the odd live event.
The AJA IoHD is a unit i’ve used before and we found it a bit temperamental, needing to be started up in a certain sequence, not liking other firewire units anywhere on the mac and generally being a pain to use. It was one of the first units so maybe this was down to firmware issues.
The Multibridge looks goo for the money but has the problem of being a PCI express interface, so no macbook connectivity.
The MXO2 and the V4HD are both new to the market since the last time i was looking for an IO device, i’ve used other products from both companies and found them to be fairly good units. I’d be interested to hear the opinions and experiences of other cow users on which one to buy and why, whats the good, the bad and the ugly of each unit?

Please do a search for this. This question has been posted numerous times. Search for the individual names of the products and you’ll find tons of opinions.

My opinion is always AJA as they make the best hardware in the business. The MXO2 is also sounding like a very good piece of hardware.

hey, how about a nice ADS Technology Pyro A/V link for you. Get that nice DV25 quality that will impress all of your clients (and keep the rest of us employed while you screw around).

May I suggest that you READ these companies websites, as well as their .pdf manuals. You will find that ALL of these products will not let you plug in firewire drives AND the breakout box on the same buss.

Blackmagic, AJA, and Matrox all have user forums on Creative Cow. How come you don’t ask on these forums, and only on this forum ?
Are you busy today – too busy to do some research, and spend some time asking around and looking this stuff up.

And by the way, the I/O HD works just fine and dandy if you use it correctly. Ask away on the AJA I/O forum.

    And one more thing….

ANYTIME you use an interface that is firewire, you MUST (absolutely without a doubt) have a firewire card in your Mac or Macbook Pro before ANY of these will work correctly.

Yeah, there is a pretty big thread on this topic already, somewhere in this forum. Comparing all three of the laptop options, the V4HD, I/O HD and MXO2. There are a lot of people who had the V4HD who are unhappy and switched. And there are great successes with the I/O HD and the MXO2. I have the MXO2 and really like it.

There are pluses and minuses to both the I/O HD and MXO2, and those are all laid out in that long thread…which BTW is here:

Yeah, I’m bored and have time as I am compressing a DVD.

As a user of V4HD (and its foibles) I can say that if I had a choice to get something new I would look at something new. That is, *not* V4HD, which at this point is behind in both price point and features (for the most part). And most definitely behind in stability – for everything they packed into this thing they did not mention in the manual that you’d have to reboot almost every time you make a change…

    Stuart,

I’ve had my MXO2 for a couple of months now and it does everything they said it would… and more. Matrox just released new drivers that give me more features than I was expecting.

I’ve given my opinon on this MXO2 box before, check out my 2 cents at:
    https://forums.creativecow.net/readpost/8/1029519

Since then, I’ve had nothing but good results from this box. The HD to SD and HD to SD scaling is awesome. The quality out of this box is fantastic.

Matrox support team is equally great. I had a problem, so I thought, (it turned out to be between the keyboard and the chair.. i.e me:) These guys treated me with white gloves! I would recommend the MXO2 to anyone looking for an I/O device for the MacPro or MacBookPro. I just got my MBP and can’t wait to see what I can do with this dynamic duo..Stay tuned.

    Good luck with your search.
    Stay well.
