I am currently using Raylight to convert mxf files to avi files.
I can then use them to edit in Premiere Pro or After Effects.

Ask the director to do a test shoot of the elements to make sure he has proof of concept. If he can’t pull it off with a simple test don’t waste an entire cast and crew shooting footage that will be unuseable in post. He also has the option of using a motion control camera to record each pass with identical camera movement that will match up in post with NO TRACKING at all.

  • Shoot in 25p instead of 24p if you are going to PAL
You can’t visually tell the difference between 24p and 24p like you can with 30p and 24p. It alleviates any pulldown issues.

I use Raylight to convert mxf footage from the p2 cards shot on a HVX200. It converts to avi or quicktime.
I assume it will work for the HDX900 p2 footage too

Even on a mac you’ll still need to turn on regional language and install a kanji font

I think you may have to camera track
make a cubic arrangement of gridded planes and render out the camera move to an AVI.
bring that into max and use the camera tracker tool

doing 3D in a 3D application is always recommended over doing 3D in a 2D application.

DVs 5:1 compression noise near contrasting edges (like at the edge of y our talent and the green screen) makes green screen keying much more difficult. It also uses 3:1:1 color
try oftening and choking your matte
or try shooting it on a camera that can give you better color and no comression like the ag-HVX200 it shoots in 4:2:2 color and you can shoot uncompressed to the P2 card and avoid alot of the compression noise

You can’t match color spaces in one or the other since they are in different color space mode natively. Metaphorically speaking, One app is Betamax and one app is VHS you can never change one to the other. You can however make a VHS dub of your beta material and work in VHS. Then dub back for final posting.

    /metaphor mode off

Someone above made the best suggestion, you render out an uncompressed RGB file from FCP to move to AE7. Once you are done in AE7 you render out a new YUV file to bring into FCP.

This should give you the same colors in all versions. When you don’t convert them yourself. AE7 and FCP try to do their own conversions and don’t do it intelligently.

Eome apps want black is 0,0,0 in RGB
Other apps want black as “Set up” and will be usually cranked up 7.5% to 16,16,16
Often it will convert from YUV to RGB or RGB to YUV and “set up” again. and add the 7.5% again.

Exporting as the color space that is native for the app will let you fix any mistakes that the app makes when automatically converting from rgb to yuv/yuv to rgb.
