Adding to Pat’s advice, don’t forget that once you have your exported file in the Premiere Pro Sequence, you can use the “scene edit detection” command to find all of your edit points.
(right click on video clip in sequence, and select “scene edit detection”)

Hey Anne,

Rather than focus on the source, I always suggest that one starts with the end in mind.

What and where are you delivering to?
Will the file size be HD, 2K, UHD, 4K, or..?
Is the main outlet vertical or horizontal? (Example 9:16 or 16:9)

Once you have an idea of distribution, then you might want to look at which one of your cameras are the main source of footage?
Where is your audio coming from?

I’ve just recently delivered a mixed format edit from a variety of sources including social media clips, where we choose DNX 1080p for our sequence setting.
The first export master was ProRes 4444 for the external grade.
The graded file was imported with audio mix to PPro, and then exported out as ProRes HQ for the end-client.

Worked well. But only because the production had a clear set of specifications for delivery.

Keep in mind, that if one codec doesn’t work for you, you can copy the content of that timeline into another timeline. Only thing to watch out for, is how the aspect ratio reacts.

Hey Rebecca,

Do you know what flavour of Avid that your short-film was edited on?

Avid.com will let you have “Media Composer | First” for free. But it is very limited in what it can do.
You can also download a free 30-day trail of the full Media Composer package.
However, please do note, that being able to download it, does not mean that it will run on your hardware, so there is caveats attached.

Alternatively, there is a way of migrating Avid Media Composer projects to Premiere Pro.
A couple of weeks ago I went the other way when exporting out a program from Premiere Pro to be mixed on Avid ProTools – there was no problems with the export itself, and import at audio facility.

This only works if your editor used the full version of Avid, otherwise you are stuck on using the “First” version.

Before going down this route, do stop up and consider this:
Why do you need to re-open the project?
If it is just to add grade, titles and end-credits, do you need the whole project unlocked, or can you “paint” on top of it?

Hey Steve,

Out of interest, have you tried to take the AVI’s into PPro via After Effects?
I have not tried it on my Mac (I run mainly PC for Adobe), but as AVI is still present inside After Effects (the slightly older version I use), I can’t see why it would not be possible.

Hey Todd,

There is an effect in the the Effect panel called “TimeCode” (it may be under obsolete effects).

You can either apply it to one clip, or an adjustment layer across multiple clips.

If memory serves me right, you should be able to program the start time to be your chosen time of day.

Hey Greg,

It is a pretty straight coast line. So a Mask and a wipe might do it for you.
Or, should I say multiple masks and loads and loads of time…

However, I would suggest you look at using BorisFX Mocha within PPro.

Or, take a big dive into the unknown and use “Content Aware fill” in either – as I found, once you have used it, there is NO going back:

Hey Juan,

Sounds like you have already tried everything.
But I would try to see what happens, if you:
1) Export file as progressive, in case you are interlaced out?
2) Check whether you are using software or hardware render?

Sometimes just switching the computer off for 1/2 hour can do magic – although that comes under the heading of doing a rain-dance etc, it has proven effective in the past…

Hey Ken,

I can only think of couple of things that it might be:
1) Video Codec is missing.
2) FCPX/Mac is notorious for rendering media hard-drives useless, if you disconnect them with out using the “eject” command. If you have a back-up drive, I would back that up before using it.
3) Maybe this is only happening to me, but I have in the past encountered a need to link each file individually to the project on a “new” Mac (when transferring Libraries from Producer to my work-station).

Are you able to “roll-back” to FCPX 10.5 and check the project there?

Hope that one of the above might work, or at least help you in the right direction.

Adding to Eric’s advice, if doing multicam, you could cut the video in multicam mode.

Or

If you want the PinP effect, just drag the “second” video on top of the existing video. Reduce second video (top video) in size, and you have your PinP effect.
