I don’t know where you are based, but around the corner from my central London location there is an independent cinema that can do both the DCP and a private viewing at a competitive cost.
I suspect that if you ask around, that you’ll find something similar to where you are.

Hey Brian,

There are so many different places in the chain that you describe, where it could go wrong.

When doing a “3840×2160 mp4 with custom data rate of 100,000 kpbs, which is the max, with multi-pass checked.” you are stretching the capabilities of most kit, including high-end 4K televisions.

I would suggest that you instead of using MP4 which is IMHO not a stable format, do a DCP out, take that to your local Digital Cinema and screen it in private. That way you’ll get to experience it the way that you want your audience to do it.

The other route is to get a 4K monitor calibrated for grading – Eizo is a good place to start.

But do keep in mind that Apple likes to mess with your file imports, so they will always playback in time line.
Uploading a MP4 file to a festival or similar, if they are using AWS or similar, there is every chance that they will re-encode your MP4. Just because those using the service might have “ticked” the wrong box somewhere.

And, then there is your MacBook Pro, which is hardware that I am NOT a specialist on. But depending on the HDMI output, cable, or just the TV, they will all conspire to make your piece of art look rubbish – in short, there is every chance in your chain to the TV that the signal is automatically down-converted to HD, then up-converted back to 4K, just because one part of that chain can not work with 4K.

Do consider playing back a 50 Mbps file in ProRes 4K from the Mac onto your TV, and see whether that changes the image quality?

But best way forward is to view it where it is meant to be viewed, in a file format that works for the distribution chain. Everything else, will ruin your day, as it will never be a good “blown up” as on your smaller MacBook Pro screen.

Adobe works in mysterious ways, which can lead to the software not loading and/or crashing.

If it persists and if it stops you working, I’ll suggest you try following until you get that screen:

1) Trash the preferences and empty the cache.

2) Make sure that you have the latest version of Creative Cloud Desktop and Bridge installed?
Same goes for cheking that your Mac is on the latest version.

3) Uninstall Adobe, and re-sinstall…

I think that it is great that you are helping your son on the way to become a Freelance Editor.
Having kit and software, will be a big plus.

But he will need to find his niche, as in what kind of editing work that he wants to do.
This will be relevant to how much he can charge – as in, can he make enough money to scale up as the jobs demands more of him?

Will he have the guts to turn down jobs that are too big for his current work-flow, or can he make contact to share/hire local resources (DO NOT FORGET INSURANCE).

But as long as he is having fun, enjoying the journey, and getting a fair price, he will do fine with whatever you give him as a starter system – even Mac Mini will be able to get him going.

My choice would be to max out on memory, processor and SSD + have a plan for back-up, whether on drive or in cloud (Google drive can scale him up to 30TB on a monthly competitive subscription – but he’ll need a minimum 1 GBps connection to enjoy it).

Then there is the business of freelancing, and that often requires him to say No, rather than yes, to jobs – no matter how attractive they are, if he can not pay his own bills, it is charity on his part, often financing companies that can afford to pay for it.

First red flag warning is when “nice” potential client (with no money) says “This will look really good on your show-reel…” – RUN – and he should not stop running away from those. They will come back with money, or find another willing village jester to work for free.

Best way to learn is to have a project, even if just “imaginary”.
Taking your example video – shoot video at a space where you want to place your object.
(Could be mobile phone, HD-SLR, video camera – anything that moves)
Find a suitable 3D model that you want to add – even a square building will do.

Start tracking and compositing, and you’ll soon learn.

As After Effects comes with Mocha, head over to BorisFX and get really good at using it whilst working on your “pet-project”.

Izotope has come a long way since RX4.

Although I have in the past mainly used the RX Elements (basic) plug-in, last year I purchased Izotope everything and have not looked back.
Recently got a few videos that needed repair. Even from within PPro, Izotope gave some impressive results.

They are still running frequent promotions + if you haven’t already done it: Log in to your Izotope account, under your account they will give you the option of looking at loyalty offers for existing users.
