I loved the old *edit system, but AtoDesk/Discreet killed it – never forgiven them for putting 2 of my editing suites on the scrap-pile, without offering an alternative.

Maybe do a call-out, I don’t know where, but there is still some of the people lurking around who used to work for companies that did the integration and technical support of *edit systems.

Avid has recently got new owners, and a lot of people left the organisation, maly for retirement. But maybe Avid has the drivers and documentation on a shelve, or would know a specialist internally (employed or retired) that might be kind enough to help you.

The obvious question is how much money you want to spend v Return on that Investment?

I’ll keep a look out as I may still have some of the old CD-Roms lying around, byt my systems was Targa-2000, so can’t promise. Adding, that these days I am in the habit of throwing out drivers that I no longer need.

I have an “old” Mac Mini M1 which works happily away and is easy run off my monitor.

Adding, that anything secondhand Apple more than 3-year old solution, where you are spending more money than on a Mac Mini, I would suggest won’t last you as long as your 2013 iMac (which is impressive).

There are two things keep an eye out for, in the addition of whether your current software will run, is that Apple is often upgrading their OS to a point where the Apps/software providers can’t keep up with the changes.
And, Apple is also going down the hell-hole of making everything A.I., not neccesarily because you need it, but because it looks like the Board of Directors are doing something to keep Apple in line with current “trends”.
What it means to you, as we have already experienced, is that some plug-in providers drops their apps instead of upgrading, as they are competing up against Apples “free” version powered by A.I..

I understand that money is always a factor, but the new Mac Mini’s are not that more expensive, and most modern 4K TV’s can double as a computer monitor.

Possibly not the greatest answer, but your consideration will be depending on whether you are making your own films (hobby?), or whether you are working for money – if for money, there is nothing lost by charging a bit more, even a tiny bit more, so you can upgrade your system every 4-5 years (normal expected life-span when buying for a business).

Just an opinion that is hopefully helpful.

Hey Ivan,

It is near impossible for anyone here to give you directions, or help, without seing the actual clock.

Paiting the number is very normal when doing invisivle VFX.

You can do this in most picture/photo editing packages. And, just crop in and replace the actual line in the digital number of the clock, by overlaying the exported edited image (line) on top of your video layer. Depending of the sice of the clock, you may need to match grain.

One way could also be to mask out the “offending” line on your clock, and do a “Change Colour” key or fill with colour in the mask.

The alternative to the above is to either reshoot the scene, or add a voice over explaining the time-travel.

But if you want real answers, you need to share the image/video.

I would maximise RAM.

If external, both T7 and T9 is great.
T9 is double the speed at 2,000 Mbps as Devrim pointed out.
Blackmagic Blackmagic PYXIS 6K page has a setup, where they are recording straight to the Samsung T7, although my preference would be the T9 (I’ve got several of both drives, and works well for post).

For your internal expansion slot, you may want to consider a Samsung 990 PRO PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 SSD with up to 7,450 / 6,900 MB/s sequential read/write speed.
You can also put this SSD in external enclosures.

Should add that I recently cancelled my Adobe Creative Cloud and moved to Davinci and Avid MC.

Davinci Studio has not crashed once for me, where Premiere Pro would do it frequently, daily sometimes just on opening the project.
That with the Adobe subscription, now with added pay-as-you-go-AI, and no Adobe Cloud for freelancers and SMEs as they closed that down. Adobe is no longer a friend of the community.

I understand, and it is a difficult choice between leaving as is, dropping the footage on to the “floor” of your editing suite, or reshoot outside of the school.

We would like to create a digital and somehow “funny” scarf…in a tiktok or social-media filter style.

I hate to be the one to point this out, but when it comes to any religion, there is always someone who will not find it “funny”. And, might take offence.

Just be careful not to make your interviewees worse off, than if they were themselves without scarf inside the school, or not in the final edit at all.

As said, just be careful that you don’t make a joke out the religion and interviewees, in order to “protect” the girls.

If the two girls in question did not want to be filmed without their scarf on, then they should have put it on, or stepped aside – Sorry, I know that this sounds harsh, but that is the reality of respecting consent for all involved.

Having said that, if you have a cut as is, without an digitally created scarfs, and show that to the girls and their families. Maybe add an on-screen caption, or include in the introduction, that France has a law that stops Muslim girls from wearing their scarf in school. Then that might just get you the consent that you need, without including the digital scarf.

This is a tough one.

I admire you wanting inclusivity, which is great.
But at the same time, you have to be careful not to step on French laws by suggesting that Muslim girls may wear scarfs in French schools.

For clarity: I have no relations one way or the other with any religion, except that I respect anyone and everybody who does.

Have you actually been asked by the girls, their parents or the school to cover their heads?
Point being that sometimes as director/producers we might take it too far to protect the people in the film, when their wishes may be not to be changed.

There are difficult questions to ask, but the answer(s) might create a solution that is easier to manage.

I take it that you have already got permission by the High School to film on premises?

If so, do the High School have public media release forms signed by parents for all of their students? (This is quite common for UK schools involving kids under the age of 18)

Are the girls in the background, or foreground?

Are they being interviewed, or speaking to camera, or just “extras on the set”?

If extras on the set, will the viewer identify their religion? Or is it a concern that being in shot might upset the family and their values?

If interview, find out if the girl wants to have a digital scarf wrapped around their head?
Or, although not desirable, maybe reshoot the interview outside the school, with the school in the background?

The above is the easiest way of getting around the problem.

But failing that, there are plenty of 3D depositories where you can buy everything that you need.

Blender is free to use, and there are compositing courses on how to use Blender for video. Otherwise, there are compositing software such as Black Magic Fusion where you can import 3D models into the video.

But there is every chance that when you watch it on the big screen, that you might regret the result – really depends on whether you can find someone who is really good, and can match “the grain (noise)” from the video onto the scarf to make it look real.

Hey John,

I echo Bill on Izotope RX 11 Advanced – got the package which comes at an eye-watering price, although often discounted around Black Friday etc. Used it recently to take a music track apart, where the vocal got drowned out. To show how the track could be improved by lowering the music. Takes a bit to learn, but best in class. Think Rolls Royce v 1980’s Skoda – hence the price difference.
(Has a 10 day free trial on website right now – check for “limitations” in trial before using)

Listening to your audio clip, I suggest that you do following on the second version that you have shared:

Insert a cut where the second part with reverb on starts. Add de-reverb and tweak to a point where the “room” of the two clips as close as possible match one another.

Then add suitable background noise on another track across the whole part of that edit, either from wild-track recording, or audio library. Or hust “paint” with Muzak.

This should take you less than 5 minutes to fix.

Keep in mind that it is most likely that only you’ll know the problem!

But that the viewer might never pick up the issue.

In which case you could spend hours on perfecting something, that is only a cost in time taking you away from making the video very “pretty” in other ways.

Izotope have de-reverb included in their entry-level Elements plug-in package – again, wait for the sale when and if that is.
