Hi Trevor,
Kristian tells me you have also tried creating a fresh account in Mac OS X and the problem still persists so that doesn’t sound like a settings problem. It’s weird because we have other customers running the PVW2800 without reporting this issue.
Can you run a comparison test by using Blackmagic Deck Control to record to tape. Does it cause the same problem? This will tell us if the issue is confined to FCP or more general.

Yes, I just tested HD1080p23.976 with the component HD output of a DeckLink HD Pro and it worked fine with the Dell monitor.

Good news, bad news. The bad news is that we confirmed a bug reported with 1080p23.98 down conversion which was first reported to us a week ago. The good news is that we think we will have a driver update to fix that bug later today. I would imagine its version number will be DeckLink Macintosh v5.1.2 and please let me know if that helps or is still causing problems. 1080/59.94 and 1080/50 down conversion should be working fine. It is only the more complex 1080/23.98 down conversion which was failing and it is more tricky as both 3:2 pulldown and down conversion are being performed simultaneously.

Hi Keith,
Can you please check if the audio output on Multibridge is in or out of sync with the video from Multibridge. My suspicion is that the audio and video are out of sync right from the start and that HDLink is faithfully playing the audio in the way it has been delivered. Your test with Multibridge would verify that suspicion either way.

That’s weird. Based on your location, I expect you are using PAL decks and monitors. Is there any chance that your monitor is PAL only and that you are outputting NTSC from FCP? Please ensure you have used the Blackmagic easy setups to create your (PAL) project. Does that help? If not, create a new PAL project and then use the facility in FCP to output Bars & Tone in the PAL format. Does that successsfully output? If none of this works, please quit from FCP and try using Blackmagic Deck Control to output your PAL material. Can you see video on the composite monitor?
Is your DeckLink desktop set to PAL or NTSC? Does the desktop output to the monitor via Multibridge SD?

Intermittent problems are very frustrating. Ideally it would be good to test with a different disk array but if the problems are only happening every few weeks or months, then that might be impractical.

Commencing with the DeckLink 5.0 drivers, I would discourage use of Blackmagic effect handling. Blackmagic effect handling uses the Blackmagic codecs to provide realtime effects provided in the DeckLink drivers and the system is used to perform a lot of this work. We started adding our own effects before Apple introduced RT Extreme. RT Extreme has a lot of great effects and we stopped adding to the Blackmagic effects quite a while ago. The option is still there for use with legacy projects but I wouldn’t use it with any new work as RT Extreme is the way to go. Blackmagic effect handling supports 2 layers of effects in SD compared with 7 or 8 using Apple’s RT Extreme. We might have developed our effect handling further but there is little point given Apple’s effect handling.
The DeckLink cards put very little load on the Mac system and so setting effect handling to Blackmagic is likely to have minimal impact. I don’t understand why you are seeing better results with Blackmagic effect handling as it really shouldn’t make much difference.

There are a few technicalities of which I should make you aware.
1. The SD-SDI limit for embedded channels of audio is 16.
2. The HD-SDI limit for embedded channels of audio is 16.3. The maximum number of audio channels supported by any SD-SDI deck, of which we are currently aware, is 8 channels. Most SD decks only support 4 channels of audio but many HD decks can be used in SD and support 8 channels of audio in SD and HD.
4. The maximum number of audio channels supported by any HD-SDI deck, of which we are currently aware, is 12 channels. In fact the only one that does support 12 channels is the Sony HDCAM SR which is a 4:4:4 deck.The driver software written for DeckLink cards supports the maximum number of embedded audio channels provided by current decks. That means that your DeckLink Pro will support up to 8 channels of embedded audio and any DeckLink HD series card will support up to 12 channels of embedded audio.
The 16 channels of embedded audio supported in the soon-to-be-released Multibridge Extreme is the maximum number of audio channels provided by the HD-SDI standard.
Out of interest, why do you want to add 24 audio channels to your video? That is a LOT of channels and only some AES hardware will support it. SDI certainly won’t support it.

That’s a very good question. Please refer to the Multibridge SD specifications. A digital-digital workflow is not currently provided in the Multibridge SD although we might be able to do that in the future with a firmware update but we don’t know as it has not been tested. The current Multibridge and the forthcoming Multibridge Extreme do support digital-digital modes. The Multibridge performs the embedding on input so you can combine SDI video input with AES audio channels and the combined signal will appear on SDI output of Multibridge and you can then capture it with a DeckLink card.
PCI Express is not going to help here as that doesn’t change the SDI specification of a maximum of 16 channels of SDI audio.

Hi Dan,
Further to my last post, we’ve done some testing here and cannot get HDV QuickTime files from the Mac to work in Premiere Pro. On the Mac platform, the HDV QuickTime codec is only available if you have installed Final Cut Pro 5.0. It is not included free with QuickTime and I suppose that makes sense as Apple probably had to license the codec from Sony. That also means that there is (currently) no HDV QuickTime codec on Windows and so Premiere Pro won’t be able to open the HDV QuickTime files captured by a Mac, even though it has some level of HDV support. That’s probably frustrating news for you but it’s better to know up front.
