Timecode overwrite problems with FCP and PVW2800
Posted by Trevor Kinsey on October 28, 2005 at 12:22 amWe are having trouble with timecode being overwritten during edit to tape with our PVW2800. To prevent this happening the timecode button has to be selected then deselected in the edit to tape window of FCP5 each time the window is open. Even if the indicator is off when the window is opened the timecode will still be overwritten unless it is selected then deselected each time.
We are using dual G5s with Extreme cards. One of the machines was previously running FCP4.5 with the same hardware and we did not have this problem.
Anybody got any clues?
Regards,
Trevor

October 28, 2005 at 4:03 amHi Trevor,
Kristian tells me you have also tried creating a fresh account in Mac OS X and the problem still persists so that doesn’t sound like a settings problem. It’s weird because we have other customers running the PVW2800 without reporting this issue.
Can you run a comparison test by using Blackmagic Deck Control to record to tape. Does it cause the same problem? This will tell us if the issue is confined to FCP or more general.

October 28, 2005 at 4:28 amOK. I haven’t used Blackmagic Deck Control so it might take me a little while to work it out.

October 28, 2005 at 4:51 amOK Luke.
Insert seems to work fine with Blackmagic Deck Control. The Timecode Insert light on the deck does not light up and timecode is not overwritten. In FCP the Timecode Insert light on the deck comes on and timecode is overwritten. I suspect it is an FCP bug.

Trevor

It might well be an FCP bug but it’s hard to understand why it would only be affecting you and there are no other reports of the problem in this forum as far as I’ve heard.
Do you have another Mac on which you could try this same test?
When you perform your test, do you keep using the same project file or have you tried with a fresh project? It is possible the bug is confined to one project file and creating a fresh project might clear it.

October 28, 2005 at 6:07 amHi Luke,
I have a second almost identical machine (it is a few months older and has been upgraded from FCP4.5 rather than being a clean install of FCP5). Both machines behave in the same way and both do it with different projects.I wonder if many other people use their systems in the same way as us. Our habits are partly inhereted from linear edit suite days and with previously using a UVW1800 as well as the PVW. The UVW doesn’t do a good job of picking up timecode on an assemble edit. We also do a bit of dropping titles back onto source tapes at the beginning of a program.
If you only do assemble edits and/or are religious about resetting the recorder to regen timecode after blacking a tape you might not notice the problem.
I guess if you use SDI to edit back to tape the issue might be different too (oh for a Digi Beta deck).
Regards,
Trevor.
PS. I have posted on the Apple Final Cut forum to see if I get any response there.

October 28, 2005 at 6:21 amHi Trevor,
That’s a good idea to post on the FCP forum to cover the possibility of it being an FCP 5.x bug. Hopefully other PVW2800 users in this or the FCP forum might respond to your post and let you know if they are seeing the problem.

October 28, 2005 at 10:42 amHi Trevor / Luke
FYI
We have the exact same issue with our system.
When inserting from FCP to our PVW2800, even if timecode is deselected, is still inserts timecode.Haven’t tried it from Deck control yet.
BTW
FCP5.02; DP2.7; Decklink HDProMarco

October 31, 2005 at 1:45 pmHi Trevor and Marco,
Please update to FCP 5.0.3 and let me know if this problem continues. If so, I will mention it to Apple in our weekly meeting and see if they have any suggestions for you.

I had already installed FCP 5.03 – there was no difference.
