  • Questions about HDLink Pro 4:4:4

Posted by Adrian Tecson on October 15, 2005 at 8:23 am

I just got my hands on an HDLink Pro 444 on loan from my reseller and I am currently testing it on my current Decklink Extreme system. Unfortunately, I dont have any means to monitor the HD output at the moment and so I have to be content with an SD/SDI downconverted output. Now when I test footage on the High Def 50i, 60i,29.97p, 30p, and all the other”NTSC/PAL” compatible setting, the downconversion and monitoring is fine. But when I work on any of the HD 24p or 23.976p projects, I dont get real time downconversion SD/SDI outputs. On the other hand, working on SD 23.976fps, I get real time output to my SD/SDI monitor. Is there no way to monitor the 24p and 23.976p unless I get an HD broadcast monitor or an HDLink with Apple Cinema display?
The reason I ask is because I would like to work in native HD 24p from the actual raw footage, whether as BMD Avis or 24fps image sequences(exported from a compositing app) and at the same time see an SD/SDI downconvert on my SD monitor.
Am i Making sense? Is this possible?
Hope someone answers soon cause my reseller is going to take the card away soon, hehe:)

    Adrian,

You can’t get a 24p down convert. What i would suggest is going to the decklink control panel in “control panel” and turning on the 23.98 -> 29.97 output under the 3:2 pulldown and vanc tab. You should be able to get a SD NTSC out of the second SDI output.

But if you want to monitor in true 1080/24p, HDLink and or a Dell 24″ LCD is the way to go. We all use the Dell 24″ in house – fantastic monitors and great value for money.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers,

Exactly what i needed Matt, thanks for the tip. I should’ve seen that when I was fiddling around with the control panel. I just didnt think of chekcing out that tab.
So just to be clear, to view HP 24p, I need the HDLink connected to an Apple Cinema or Dell HD LCD, but to see a 23.967p project, then I could just use the downconversion from the SD/SDi Output from the HDPro. Is there really a big difference when I use a 24p project and a 23.967p project? I’m thinking I could just use the 23.967p project for footage shot on the HDCAM 24p. Dont have a deck here with me so I can’t do an actual digitizing test. All I have are targa sequences exported from a 24p HD timeline and those are the ones I drop in the 23.967 timeline. Seems to play out fine after a render.

    Matt

How does the Dell look vs using an HDLink and the Dell. I assume your connecting the Dell via component?

To clarify, are we talking about the Dell UltraSharp 2405FPW 24-inch LCD? I just called Dell to order one yesterday to use with the Decklink HD Pro 4:4:4 card I just bought, because I saw it had component inputs. However, the salesperson told me that the component input was SD only. Is that true? I put off the purchase, as I don’t have a HDLink and wanted to see if there were other monitor options available that had HD component inputs.

    Thanks!

    Hi,

The Dell 2405FPW 24″ UltraSharp Wide Screen LCD Monitor has DVI-D, component analog and composite analog inputs. We have used the component inputs for displaying component HD analog video. Composite is only an SD technology and maybe that is what the salesperson had in mind when they mentioned that the analog connection was only for SD input? In any case, the component analog is working well for HD in our case but obviously DVI-D is crisper as there is no analog noise.

Is it possible to monitor 1080 23.976 PsF with the Dell’s analog input, or only with the HDlink?

    Hi David,

Yes, I just tested HD1080p23.976 with the component HD output of a DeckLink HD Pro and it worked fine with the Dell monitor.
