    Hi Robin,

Firstly, does the G4 have dual processors? What speed is it’s CPU, eg 1.25 GHz?

Secondly, did you previously use the DeckLink SP in this same G4 with Panther and Final Cut Pro HD 4.5? If so, did it suffer from the same problem?

Thirdly, what other PCI cards do you have in your G4?

[Robin] “When I capture I get a clean signal on the SDI output.”

Do you also get a clean signal on SDI output when you play back the captured material?

[Robin] “when I am in FCP, I get horizontal flickery lines over the screen. The image itself looks stable to me (doesn’t look like it’s a sync issue) but there are all these fast moving white lines flickering across the image.”

Does this mean that during capture, the SDI output looks fine but the computer monitor shows these flickering lines?

Once the video is captured and you play back the video, do these lines appear on either or both of the computer monitor and the SDI output?

  • Hi,

The easiest way to ensure that you have correct colorspace conversion is to use the downconversion feature of the DeckLink drivers. By enabling down conversion in the DeckLink PrefPane in the System Preferences, you can continue to work in the Blackmagic HDTV 1080i 50 – 10bit timeline. When you play back the HD video through the DeckLink card, it will output as standard definition PAL.

    Hi Whit,

As much as we like to sell DeckLink cards, you might not need one.

If you are capturing from, and recording back to, HDV tape, then you simply need a Firewire connection for that.

Your camera has component analog outputs which you could connect to a suitable CRT or LCD monitor which accepts HD component analog.

Burning to DVD does not require a DeckLink card.

Where the DeckLink card with HDLink might be useful is, once you have captured your HDV material via FireWire, you can edit it and apply effects and text and then preview it via the DeckLink card to see how it will look on a TV before outputting to tape. If you want to output to a Sony HDCAM or Panasonic D5 deck, the DeckLink HD series cards will let you do that too.

  • Hi Juan,

You have discovered the solution and this is the same as it was in previous versions of the driver. For a detailed understanding of what is happening during log & capture with the stable black option enabled, please see the technical note How to sync a deck with a DeckLink card.

    Hi Juan,

That’s a neat idea and I’ll pass it on to the engineers. There’s a lot going on at the moment but hopefully they will implement your idea as it would be convenient. Thanks for your suggestion.

    Hi,

Can you provide some more details about “virtual com port”? This could mean many things so I am not sure that I understand your question.

August 18, 2005 at 7:59 am in reply to: Plays in Quicktime but not on Decklink

    Hi,

I’m not sure what is going wrong but going from DV to Animation codec to uncompressed is going to degrade the quality of the video because of the compression/decompression cycles.

If possible, I would recommend that you use the Adrenaline system to output uncompressed video via SDI and then use the DeckLink system with Premiere Pro to capture to an uncompressed timeline. This will capture in the AVI file format and maximum quality will be retained as you will be working with uncompressed material and not have to worry about generational loss with DV and Animation codecs.

August 18, 2005 at 7:52 am in reply to: Audio problem capture, please help.

    Hi Alejandro,

Thank you for letting us know that you have solved your problem. That is good news and I appreciate you posting both the problem and the solution as that will help other DeckLink users.

DeckLink cards use the television standard sample rate of 48 kHz and 24 bit for audio. As long as your audio conforms to this standard, the DeckLink card will accept it.

  • Hi Martin,

[Martin] “Any chance to add to the Photoshop plugin a virtual remote control ?”

That’s a great suggestion and I’ll pass it on. Meanwhile you can use Blackmagic Deck Control for this task. Firstly, place the deck in DT mode which is an abbreviation for dynamic tracking. It is also called Frame Mode on some decks. This will ensure that you see full resolution frames. Your video deck will respond to the standard keys used for deck control, i.e. spacebar,

    Hi Eli,

This is the right place to post Kona SD questions as we’ve maintained support for the Kona SD in our drivers. You can find a technical note with the latest information about the Kona SD drivers.

Can you please verify that your system, including software versions, matches the DeckLink Minimum System Requirements for Mac OS X for Tiger?

If so, can you provide a few more details about your system setup, eg dual processor G5/2.0 with PCI-X slots, Apple Xserve RAID, Kona SD in slot 3, Fiber Channel card in slot 4, no other PCI cards installed, outputting to Digitbeta.

If you monitor the output of the card, does it also show problems similar to what you see when you play back the tape?

I’ve been tracking an issue which 2 other Kona SD users have reported and you can review the thread at Kona SD and G5 issue. In their case, they have problems with Edit to Tape in 8 and 10 bit uncompressed but more problems with 10 bit. They don’t see the problem on a G4 running Tiger but only on a G5 running Tiger. They don’t see problems running Panther on the G5 but only when they update to Tiger on the G5. We have not been able to replicate this exact same behavior but did find a QuickTime issue which we’ve reported to Apple and believe it related to their problems. Please have a read through the thread and see if it sounds like your problem. If so, we need to work out why 3 Kona SD users are seeing this problem but we haven’t received similar reports from others.
