Do you have soundtrack? if so cut your video then send it to Soundtrack and adjust the audio there. I find it’s easier working on it like that, more so if I have to do surround sound. I hope this helps.

I think Shane is correct. To me it’s better to add a little extra and cut where needed rather than just what I think I need at the time. I’ve done it dan’s way and realized that maybe a little extra may be needed or the client changes their minds and wants more footage of the shot.

  • The camera sounds fine, but from my experece check the apple site if you want to get a computer. I found a refurbished one here way under your budget:
    https://store.apple.com/us/product/FB991LL/A?mco=MTA4MzI0OTE

You can still add on FCP and get apple care(trust me, if you’re gonna edit on location this will be your friend) and be under budget. Also you may want to think about getting an external hard drive a TB is now less than $200, and it’s a great way to have a back up of your files. Also keep Imovie around, I don’t know how many times a client has given me a tape where the audio wasn’t FCP friendly but I could export the footage with the audio into FCP and everything was fine.

I’m not that much of a Canon camcorder fan, but if it’s paid for and it has a Mic imput I say use it until you can’t.

I hope this helped, and good luck.

I doubt the company is going to pay for another person. We have a .Pac setup for Avid, but I was hoping there may be someting already in FCP I didn’t know about. They may be willing to buy the software though.

look for “Final Cut Pro Documents”, inside should be the capture scratch folder as well as the render file folder and several others, if you put those on the external hard drive as well as your project file you should be good to go. Remeber you will have to relink all files if you have to open it. Hope that helps.

It could only be seeing the Alpha channel. Try saving it with out the alpha channel and see if that works. Also does your coworker have the same version of PS? if his is lower it may not be able to read the file.

If the people want something bad enough, someone will supply it. I think the market for Mac Pros are still there for a few more years, but with improvements in the speed and HD space of the Imac and mac mini, who knows? Don’t count the mac pro out yet.

June 24, 2010 at 7:11 am in reply to: Newbie question: Using External Hard Drive

If the video is already on your external HD then you should only have to import them from your external HD, log and capture shouldn’t be needed. If you are going to edit on another computer, make sure to put your media volume on the external HD too.
