[gary adcock] “question
you do know that 720p always has 60 frames right?
I am also assuming that you understand how to extract the frames with CT? “Yes, I know it always goes to tape at 60. I was curious if it made any difference what FCP DVDPRO HD preset I used to capture the botched tape. Because there are no flags that tape, I

[gary adcock] “The simple process is to log and capture your clips and then go thru the process of running each clip thru CT to extract the redundant frames from the video stream. you will need to make sure that you check to see that you are on the 0 or 5 frame (the start of a 3:2 cadence.”
Thanks for the reply.
The moral of the story is that the editor should ALWAYS receive the camera master tapes! And if you are having clones made, be sure the dubbing house understands how to properly clone DVDPRO HD tapes (with TC and UB – with the frame rate flags).
I’m going to try the CT path. This is a 30 minute interview with the camera rolling the whole time. Do I now capture using the “DVDPRO HD 720p60” easy set-up? Or does it even matter now that there are no flags on the tape?

[gary adcock] “The easiest way to clone DVCPROHD tapes is to copy deck to deck over FW.”
Thanks for the replay, Gary.
The problem is that the camera master could be missing, and the clone that I received seems like it was not dubbed correctly (I only get 59.94 vid rate on capture). I just think this tape was not flagged corectly when it was dubbed.
How can I use this tape if it turns out to be my only option? The client is asking me this question.
Can I capture that tape (bad clone) using the “DVDPRO HD 720p60” preset and use the DVDPRO HD frame rate converter to get it back to 24p?
Thanks tons.

Thanks, I ended up doing the down convert on capture, as suggested. Worked great.

[D Phillips] “Is there something in the initial setup that I am missing? Since this is an issue that initially was present on the desktop as well as FCP, I am assuming it to be a Kona problem. Is there something in FCP that is set wrong? I’m open to any suggestions…”
I’ve used the KONA2_Audio_FAQ.pdf as a referance for set-up:
Set Output Volume slider to 67% for Unity gain
In FCP Log and Capture dialog, this translates to -

[justin wheeler] “Hi. I am preparing video to be encoded for full-screen broadcast stock footage purposes and see that the big stock footage libraries like Getty are using photo-jpeg, while many smaller ones are using sorenson vid 3. Now H.264 is being hailed as the highest quality compressed video.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to which is really the highest quality to size ratio? Seems like photo-jpeg might be the best answer since the big guys are deeply tied up in it for now.
Also, is there any difference in quality when exporting/encoding directly from Media100xr v.7.5.1 versus exporting to Cleaner 6?
Hi Justin,
I would stick with Photo-JPG (at 98%), that is what most of the stock agencies are using today. With H.264 the user will need QT7, so you lose a bit of backwards compatibility. Plus, Photo-JPG is the spec for Getty, Artbeats, etc…
I use Cleaner or Compression Master with Media100 referance exports.

[Jerry Hofmann] “Remove it by highlighting it’s name in the Filters tab of the clip or nest in the Viewer (option click a nest to open it in the viewer, double click a clip in the timeline to do the same), and tap on the old delete key… or just turn it off by unchecking that little blue box there next to it’s name.
“Great, thanks for that — I’m fairly new to FCP. Been on Media100 and Avid for years. Still getting to know my way around.
