On the rMBP; turn off “Automatic graphic switching” in the energy saver preferences and set the display scaling to 1920×1200.

Chalk me up in the “prefers” category. I’ve used them all; AVID, Media 100, Premiere, FCP7, etc. Once you get your head around the way it works, you’ll find that FCP X is massively powerful under the hood.

I’ve just started doing a project (cutting on location) with a retina MBP and it’s amazing. I’m working with RED, 7D and GoPro footage. Looking forward to the next round of updates.

FYI: Here is a recent project I did with FCP X (shot on RED):

The left-right panning on the bike parts at :25 and about 1:00 was very smooth. If you don’t mind saying, was that done with camera and a slider or with stills and keyframing? Either way, the effect was very nice.”

Thanks for the comments, Dave. Those moves were done on a slider.

  • [Kevin Zimmerman] “How do you deal with the one edit per project architecture of FCPX? I think there are many, many issues to spiral out of control over with FCPX, but this framework that Apple is created — where a project IS a single timeline, and therefore IS a single cut — baffles me. And I have no idea how I would work around it.”

I just create folders in the Project library for each job. Versioning is done by duplicating the Project (timeline) and re-naming. Pretty simple.

  • FYI – Same behavior here; 1 second delay on playback – only happens when A/V Output is turned on.

[Andreas Kiel] “Again, as the others said: great job Logan.”

    Andreas,

I totally agree on all points, especially working and finishing in a collaborative environment. FCPX is far from the best option for every job – but I’ll choose to use it for the right project. Today I’m back in FCP7.

[Davee Schulte] “Nice Work. Can you share any drawbacks or advantages to using FCPX over your previous editor (Im assuming FCP 7).

Thanks for the comment. I’m a long time Final Cut Pro user. Also Avid, and Media 100 in a previous life. For DSLR content FCPX is super fast and efficient. I’m using a 12 core Mac Pro with 32GB ram. The advantage is no transcoding to ProRes with DSLR content before the edit. So for this project it made sense.

Here is a short post I did about FCPX when it was released:
    https://www.verticalonline.com/final-cut-pro-x/

The main disadvantage for me is that I hate working without a broadcast monitor. Not only for color correction and client stuff, but I just feel naked without it. Kinda like riding a bike without a helmet. I’m already over the hump regarding learning the software, and so focusing on the story is what matters to me. I can edit fine on most platforms, etc.

    Cheers,
    Logan

[arthur kobin] “I selected all clips, dragged and dropped the transition, but it is only applied to the two clips between which it was dropped.”

Try; select all and double-click the desired transition. Also, you can modify the default transition length in preferences / editing / transition.

    Cheers.
