Thanks I’ve already tried that. Unfortunately there’s not an exact semantic corollary between a Motion behavior and a LiveType effect. I don’t want to spend a lot of time (if I don’t have to), trying out which text behanior matches what LiveType effect. Which prompts my question about a guide.

To be clear, this is not about matching a specific LiveType font behavior, but rather a LiveType composite timeline effect.

FWIW, where Avid excels is in its ability to have a window that displays the time codes of multiple video and/or audio layers at the timeline cursor. These all update in real time play.

And don’t flame me for mentioning a powerful Avid feature…

Respectfully, I have considerable experience with Avid, FCP AND discreet edit. I agree that there are certainly limitations in both FCP’s text tool and LiveType that need addressing. However I also feel that your comment is a little contradictory. If we’re talking about a “simple” graphic, then that could be done in FCP’s text tool. If we’re talking about a LiveType motion graphic, then what in Avid yields comparable results? Certainly not the Title Tool. I haven’t worked with Marquee in a few years (Version 1), but it was certainly no walk in the park.

Perhaps one issue is my having had experience working with Title Motion on discreet edit. It’s no LiveType for motion graphics, but for quick, easy & great looking still graphics, it couldn’t be beat. It’s been a few years so I don’t know if this is still true.

Maybe the Motion templates will be a help in the new release.

Um, have you thought of simply importing a LiveType ipr. file directly into FCP and then using “Open in Editor” to make your changes?

So yes, while text handling could certainly still be improved in FCP, I still wouldn’t use Avid as the standard bearer.

Get 10 editors in a room and you’ll get 10 different views…What does sort of surprise me in some of the responses is the “how dare I even ask” reaction.

As someone who enjoys editing on FCP, it doesn’t mean I shouldn’t want some of the features I’ve worked with in other (non) Avid NLEs. If you want to ger an earful, just ask some of the discreet edit people here about that undo history.
