I just bought two 1200 HMI Fresnels from China and they seem to be fine. I just tested them today and they both will restrike within 5 minutes of being hot for over an hour. I paid 2650 for two lights with ballasts including lamps and they were very well packed. The ballast fan makes some noise but nothing we can’t overcome. All in all, I think they were a pretty good deal. On the other hand…I had a friend that bought just one and he had an issue with the ballast and they wanted him to ship it back. Shipping cost was twice what it cost to send it to the US.

It will surprise me if it has more latitude than the RED which we already own and love but for us it’s not a replacement for the RED. We shoot cine style with the RED using Zeiss primes and the 3700 Varicam will be used for higher end broadcast work typical to what we currently use the HDX900 for. We are importing and editing RED footage faster than we can digitize tape at this point so moving to a totally digital world has actually become a reality with us. I think that once people do it they’ll realize how easy it is and in reality much more safe than having one master tape. When you shoot digitally, all your copies are masters.

I’ve found that the HDX900 is becoming the most requested camera for us. We are still shooting on the SDX900 at times but the HDX has taken over. I think that it has become more the “standard” for many of our clients.

I think I’m going to have to order one of those. Can you leave the mount on and still put it in the portabrace bag?

We are using the Panasonic BT-LH1700W 17″ widescreen high definition monitor which features two auto-switching SDI / HD-SDI inputs, waveform monitoring, and freeze frame/split screen functions. You can buy them new for under 3K.

  • There is a group here in Columbia, SC that has the Azden mic in their SDX-900 and thay are less than impressed. I would stay with a standard Lectrosonic 201 or 411. They have proven to be some of the best wireless mics on the market. A bit pricey, but you truely get what you pay for when it comes to wireless mics.

    John,
I am working on some new ones now. I should have them up in the next couple of days. Are you looking for any specific look or setup? We do a lot of Golf resort imaging, so a lot of our setups are rich and saturated to look like warm weather shots but I can work on a different type of look. Just let me know.

October 30, 2006 at 11:17 pm in reply to: Questions for HDX900 users

There are pros and cons to both cameras. We used the HDX900 nine days in the last 2 weeks. Two of those days were from clients looking for a CineAlta crew in South Carolina. The benefit was that we were able to use the HDX900 in 1080i in for both customers. That’s two jobs that we wouldn’t have booked with the Varicam. Both clients were very pleased and we are comfortably offering the HDX900 as an alternative for the CineAlta projects.

You can’t own everything…..but the HDX900 sure helps bridge the HD formats.
