    Chris,

I just got done finishing a HDV project that we downconverted to the DV NTSC codec to edit in 720X480. We had the option of coming recapturing the HDV footage through the component outs in the beta SP Photo-Jpeg format for editing but chose the DV route since our final product was going to DVD and we learned that mpeg2 works better with the DV codec of 720X480 instead of 720X486.

We are now just trying to figure out the best way to compress the DV sequence out to the mpeg2 dvd file. We actually for kicks also compressed the HDV footage to an SD DVD and it looked nice!!

The DV codec held the HDV up well and looked good. We used a Sony HDV deck that downconverted the footage to DV. It did a pretty good good job. I wish we could have finished in HDV and produced a HD DVD. Maybe next time.

    Good Luck

    Lee

Thanks so much, Jerry. I had just figured it out when I saw your e-mail. It is funny. In the instructions for the HDV ddeck they tell you to turn the VCR HDV/DVV setting to DV instead of Auto…WHICH IS WRONG as you know. It won’t see it that way. Your way works perfectly. Sony needs to fix their instructions:)

    Thanks Again

Hey! Paul your advice was dead on. You answered all my questions and then some!!! Unfortunately I had to return the HDV deck last night but am lookig forward to getting it back in a few weeks. I did however already try disabling decklink desktop setting and it seems like it will work as I got a black monitor window to appear in my log & capture window.

Lukr your advice was great too! I haven’t read the support article yet but plan to. The HDV easy setup is great!!! I am able to drop my clips in their sequences and see them on my canvas/sequence monitor. I wonder if there is way to see my HDV sequences on my NTSC SD monitor?

HDV is great! It is amazing how much more crisper native HDV looks with the picture having much more info than SD. I’m looking forward to working in HDV!

    Thanks

Hey Chris. Yor post helped me out yesterday and you have probably already figured it out on your own but in case you need some more info here is 2 very helpfully responses to similiar issues. In the 1st response Paul talks about how to keep your clips from breaking up when capturing. I ended up with like 60 clips for an hours worth of ftg. I haven’t been able to test Paul’s info out yet but I think it will work.
    cheers

    hey
we just started with hdv too and have a similar setup. from what i’ve found, do not use the “apple intermediate hdv” easy setup. this recompresses the video to all i frames, so you loose a generation. (it was a stopgap until native hdv was added to fcp 5 – from what i gather) just use the hdv 1080i 60 or whatever you need.
also it seems you have to disable the decklink video desktop in the system settings, or you don’t get capture window preview on capture. it does capture, but you don’t see it. i’ll try that tomorrow. we found the decklink hdv easy setup does a realtime downconvert to sd for output, so that’s pretty cool to monitor on your sd monitor.
fyi i’m new at this format, so i really don’t know what the h i’m talking about.
oh yeah, also on your captures it will break the video into multiple clips unless you uncheck the “shot/take” box on in the capture window. this makes a new clip every time the camera was stopped/started.

If you want to capture in HD from the HDV camera via Firewire, the only option available to you will be to use an Apple or Blackmagic HDV easy setup. When you then play out via the DeckLink Extreme card, it will automatically down convert the output to NTSC or PAL. Please also see the support note HDV capture preview missing in Final Cut Pro HD 5.0.

If you want to capture in SD from the HDV camera via Firewire, the only option available to you will be to use the Apple DV easy setup and you will also need to configure your camera to output DV rather HDV. You can then use a Blackmagic DV easy setup to output via the DeckLink Extreme.

Hey Chris. Try reinstalling FCP. That might hopefully clear up your problem.

    Gary,

Thanks so much for your input. I have the decklink SD which does offer component and I haven’t had the luck you have had. Which component cable(B-Y, R-Y or Y) do you use to get the composite signal? Also I will assume that you then run your audio out from the vhs/dvd machine through a mixer in order to obtain audio. Is this true?

What setting are you able to capture the footage on from your log and capture window? Is it the NTSC photo-jpeg codec or is it another one that you need for FCP to see the composite signal?

    Thanks
