Hey everyone. Is it possible to get a composite or S video signal into Final Cut Pro via one of the Black magic cable/cards? Do they give you a direct in on any of their products or do you have to continue to get the footage in via firewire through a converter box. I am hoping that they have a way that the composite or s video input is just another attachment off their cable OR that there is a hook up to the video card.

Any advice or knowledge about this would be extremely appreciated.

    Thanks

The Decklink SP card will do it for you. But at $595, it’t more expensive that getting an ADVC-100 or 110 which cal also do it…but for $265-$299.

WAIT! I am wrong. The decklinks don’t do composite or s-video…component video only.

NONE of the decklink cards accept composite or S-video input…odd, I thought I recalled that they did. Hmmm.

Best bet would be the ADVC line by Canopus.

I have the Decklink extreme. It does accept composite. It is just on one of the componant cables. I assume that any decklink with componant in would be the same. I did it the other day from VHS to FCP to Compressor to FTP to another artist so we would be on the same page. Tried it from DVD while I was at it, just for grins. Works great.

    Thanks,
    Gary

    Gary,

Thanks so much for your input. I have the decklink SD which does offer component and I haven’t had the luck you have had. Which component cable(B-Y, R-Y or Y) do you use to get the composite signal? Also I will assume that you then run your audio out from the vhs/dvd machine through a mixer in order to obtain audio. Is this true?

What setting are you able to capture the footage on from your log and capture window? Is it the NTSC photo-jpeg codec or is it another one that you need for FCP to see the composite signal?

    Thanks

DVDxDV will get video off of unencrypted DVD’s as pristine as possible. But then again, most DVD players have component out. But then again, it might be progressive scan.

    FYI on DVD input only,
    Bryce

    Don’t worry Mr. B. I have a cunning plan…

Yes, the Y cable on Decklink is used for composite. I have an SP and I capture component from VHS and DVDs via loop through a JVC DV deck with component in/out. I use an Ocean Matrix AB component switcher to go between that and my Beta deck. Works great.
