Hmm dropped frames: My worst nightmare.
Working on a dual 2ghz G5 with 3gigs RAM running on osx 10.3.9 using FCP 5. Connected a Sony FX-1 to the G5 via Firewire and setup fcp for HDV1080i50.
Normally, if I get dropped frames with DV, I uncheck the following under User Preferences:
    “Report dropped frames during playback”
    “Abort ETT/PVT on dropped frames”
    “Abort capture on dropped frames”
and the default setting of “On timecode break: Make New Clip”
to “On timecode break: Warn after capture”
Now with the HDV footage I started with default settings when capturing and got timecode break messages(which is normal for me on default settings).
So I unchecked those 3 options and changed on timecode break warn after capture.
The bizarre thing is that it tuned me about timecode breaks still. I tried for about 2hrs then just captured everything with capture now(which made 300 clips from 2hrs footage).

I hope someone out there knows how to maybe sort out this problem because I like to log my clips become capturing and get all the video footage off the tape.
*I will be holding my thumbs*

Hey Chris. Yor post helped me out yesterday and you have probably already figured it out on your own but in case you need some more info here is 2 very helpfully responses to similiar issues. In the 1st response Paul talks about how to keep your clips from breaking up when capturing. I ended up with like 60 clips for an hours worth of ftg. I haven’t been able to test Paul’s info out yet but I think it will work.
    cheers

    hey
we just started with hdv too and have a similar setup. from what i’ve found, do not use the “apple intermediate hdv” easy setup. this recompresses the video to all i frames, so you loose a generation. (it was a stopgap until native hdv was added to fcp 5 – from what i gather) just use the hdv 1080i 60 or whatever you need.
also it seems you have to disable the decklink video desktop in the system settings, or you don’t get capture window preview on capture. it does capture, but you don’t see it. i’ll try that tomorrow. we found the decklink hdv easy setup does a realtime downconvert to sd for output, so that’s pretty cool to monitor on your sd monitor.
fyi i’m new at this format, so i really don’t know what the h i’m talking about.
oh yeah, also on your captures it will break the video into multiple clips unless you uncheck the “shot/take” box on in the capture window. this makes a new clip every time the camera was stopped/started.

If you want to capture in HD from the HDV camera via Firewire, the only option available to you will be to use an Apple or Blackmagic HDV easy setup. When you then play out via the DeckLink Extreme card, it will automatically down convert the output to NTSC or PAL. Please also see the support note HDV capture preview missing in Final Cut Pro HD 5.0.

If you want to capture in SD from the HDV camera via Firewire, the only option available to you will be to use the Apple DV easy setup and you will also need to configure your camera to output DV rather HDV. You can then use a Blackmagic DV easy setup to output via the DeckLink Extreme.
