Hey Steve. Have you ever gone from HDV to SD DVD? If you have what was your workflow? Did you do a QT conversion to another codec or something else?

I think the issue most people I know that work with HDV is it is a tough process to get from your sequence and back out maintaining 80-90% of its quality because I certainly agree that it is a good format that looks beautiful! I for one thought it was as easy and almost as inexpensive a process as DV but came to find out that to probably for it to be done right you need to invest in a few expensive accessories.

I’d be interested to hear the thoughts of the forum leaders and other advertised compression experts but they for the most part never seem to chime in. Just in case…I’m not meaning that sarcastically or anything. It would just be interesting to hear their thoughts, thats all! Interesting topic.

    Thanks

    Lee

    Andrew,

Highlight the audio in your sequence and then go under Modify and choose stereo pair. This should be checked to make it stereo. If it will not check then perhaps the audio that you imported was not stereo to begin with.

    Good Luck

    Michael,

Thanks for the tips. Do you work for Cortina Productions by chance just outside of DC? I use to freelance for them.

  • Peter,

First off, You single handlely make this forum very useful and informative. I have learned so much in the past couple of days from your posts! So thank you for your thorough and great responses!

The second thing I am wondering is from latest testing with compressor 2.

[pdr] “Imagine a one step encoding job for a HF sequence that does the following:

Try this. Bring the audio into quicktime and then try exporting it as a quicktime movie. See if this helps.

    Good Luck

  • Jared,

Grab a sub, seat and read this article from ken stone. <https://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/qt_movies_from_fcp.html>
    It should shed some light!!

  • Hey Jared,

I am in search of this too and if I ever find anything I’ll let you know. The thing that makes sense though so far that I have found is generally the smaller the file the crappier the images:(

I can tell you this though…most movie trailers that you view are hosted on their FTP sites and I can almost assuredly guarantee you that they are over 5 megs a minute. If you download it then check the file size after it is downloaded. We will from time to time put a video on our site and the ones that we compress for our site good quality compressions that are over 5 megs a minute.

One last question…foot long or 6 inches…sub that is;)

Unfortunately, I had to do this to match the graphics which were 720X480 and we had a few NTSC Beta Sp clips of 720X486.

My advice to avoid all those troubled waters is to just go component out of your dvd player and capture it in FCP that way in stead of go through 2 different programs to import it in FCP. Of course, if you don’t have permission then you’ll walk the plank;)
