Yes, that’s correct. I use a couple of them in my system.

I’ve used both and there’s no functional difference except for the screws that keep the cable in place. The RS422 connector on Sony and Panasonic VCR’s uses a metric size screw diameter and thread while the DB9mm you get a computer supply uses a standard size and thread which is slightly too large. If you try to force it in the screw could snap in the machine connector. I’ve found that you can screw it in a little way and keep the connector from falling off. So you can connect the cable, but you can’t fully secure it with the screws. It’s not a problem on the I/O side however it uses a standard DB9.

Of course if the DVCPro 50 deck has the SDI output option you’ll want to do that. The SDI card transcodes from DV50 to SDI. Otherwise you will have to settle for component analog which will still look good. I would choose the 8 or 10 bit uncompressed setting in FCP for this project. Once loaded into FCP the original format is irrelevant as long as you captured both DV50 and SDI at the same settings. I don’t have any experience with 24p so I can’t say how it will work.

I checked out an 8-bit project and you are correct. The send to audio project file is ghosted. If you unlink the audio and video track, the send to audio project file option becomes available. If you don’t need to see the video you should be able to accomplish your noise removal.Lee

I just did a test using DVCPro50 footage captured from DVCam using the IO with no problems. Did you choose “Send to Soundtrack Pro Audio File Project?” The other option is Send to Soundtrack Pro for Multitrack Project which may be what you wound up with.

Some have said that the analog outputs add some smoothing to DV (the apple DV codec adds no 4:1:1 smoothing as does the AVID DV Codec). I usually go analog from my DSR-1500a to the DVCPro 50 codec or 8-bit uncompressed. The results are quite good. Looking critically on a Sony Broadcast monitor I have a hard time seeing the difference. I also have some projects that I capture via firewire and then use the IO to monitor analog video out. That looks quite good as well.

If you have the Io control panel installed check the output section. There is a button to add 7.5 setup to analog outputs.

I had that problem initially, along with a failure to control any decks via RS422. I trashed the control panel and reinstalled and everything works fine now. I don’t know if that really did the trick, but it’s worth a try.
