Regardless of all of that, you don’t need an external reference if you are in a stand alone configuration. There’s no benefit and quality is neither degraged nor improved. The Io has an internal reference that works just fine.

I think Ronny is refering to the FireWire connection between Io and the host computer which is uncompressed.

It should work as you will be transcoding from SX to SDI in you player and encoding as DVCPro 50 on capture. When you say your system handles DVCPro 50 well, have you captured any? Playing back media is less demanding than capturing and you may be experience dropped frames.

If you have to use the Apple audio out in a studio environment you might consider using a level matching and line balancing solution like the Matchbox from Henry Engineering. It’s a bidirectional device, that handles sources from -10 dBv to +4 dBm balanced 600 ohm output suitable for long runs. Not really. Again if you have a UVW series deck, it’s annoying to view without an external reference as a black sync bar will roll (very slowly) through the monitor picture, but won’t be recorded on the tape. You also get a message on the deck display that says there is no reference.

I’ve saved, saved as, saved as default, and even named each preset (Betacam, DVCam). Without fail, the next time I boot up, it’s back to the original presets 1-Factory Preset (default), 2-Factory Preset and so on. Each time I boot up I have to go into the control panel, set the input from SDI to Component, Audio to Analog, Output to Betacam Component, adjust the proc amp, etc. The control panel just will not remember the settings from the previous session.

You don’t need Blackburst or Reference to use Io in a stand-alone edit system, capturing and editing from analog or SDI sources, and then back out to tape. You only need an external reference if you plan to integrate Io into a switching and mixing system where you need to take the Io’s output synchronously.
If you want to spend the money it’s not a bad idea to have an external reference, especially with decks such as Sony UVW Betacam series which require an external reference to avoid a sync bar in the monitor picture when recording (the sync bar is not actually recorded on the tape). I don’t have a black burst reference in my system. I simply use the Io’s composite out as a reference for my UVW-1800. BTW, this has been covered extensively in this forum previously.

I sent a message to AJA support a few weeks ago and was surprised when there was no reply. They are usually quite responsive. Perhaps this is a major bug they’re wrestling with.

I’ve had this problem ever since the control panel was fully implemented. I set one or more presets and the next time I boot up they’re gone. The IO defaults to SDI input. I sent a note to AJA, no response.

One or two tracks seems to be it, however I haven’t tried any more.
