If you are talking about the difference in level between the output of your Mac and the Io, there is a big difference. The Mac’s audio out is at consumer level around -10 dbf and the Io is at professional levels, selectable between +18 and +24dbf. How is your system configured? Does the Io feed your deck directly? Does your deck have professional balanced inputs? Does the deck then feed your monitors? In my system I use an 8-input mixer with balanced inputs for my two decks the Io. I also feed the output from my Mac into a couple of unbalanced inputs. The mixer then feeds the decks (for analog recording) and a powered speaker system for monitoring.Lee

To me implies that FCP is capable of serving as a TC generator during the blackening process for some class of capture/control devices (e.g. ones based on PCI and which have a 422 port for deck control). However, perhaps this isn’t possible with the Io because FCP commuicates with it via Firewire.”

FCP is not capable of serving as a TC generator even if the deck is controlled via RS-422 on a PCI card. It is only capable of telling the deck where to start generating its own TC. It is capable of reading TC via RS422 via Io, PCI card such as Kona, or via a RS422 adaptor such as Keyspan.Lee

The Io enables FCP to read TC through the RS422 connection. It does not have a TC generator. On your 1500 set the TC mode to internal. I believe that Io reads LTC through the RS422 port, however you can record both LTC and VITC if you want. What I do is use the 1500’s TC preset function to set the timecode and then simply press play and record.

No it does not support the video preview function of Photoshop CS 2. The preview works via firewire to a Firewire capable Camcorder or deck.

Solid performance and great support from AJA. The only minus to FCP vs. hardware based NLE’s (AVID and M100 in my experience) is the ability to mix resolutions in the timeline without rendering. Makes things a little difficult if you share media between different projects at different data rates and resolutions.

I never said that I have a DSR 11. I have the 1500, however the firewire issue is the same for both decks when capturing DV via firewire. The SDI option is a great idea, however it’s expensive. I put my money into the Analog option, however I have many projects that are fine in DV so I capture DV via firewire and then use the Io for monitoring and output to Betacam.

I also forgot to add that if you choose the A/B switch the total firewire cable length cannot exceed 15 feet between your Mac and the Io or DSR 11. The switch counts for at least one foot. I use an 8′ cable between the Mac and switch, and 3′ cable between the switch, Io, and my DSR1500.
I capture my DVCam material via firewire and then switch back to the Io for monitoring. It becomes a pain when you need to capture something in the middle of editing. You have to switch to the DV Easy Setting, Exit FCP, switch the A/B switch to the deck, open FCP and capture. Then you have to do the whole thing in reverse to use the Io. Dooable, but not very elegant.

You cannot have both the Io and a firewire device such as your DSR 11 hooked up to the firewire bus same time (including PCI cards). This is covered in AJA’s Io FAQ on their website https://www.aja.com/support_Io.html#faq at the bottom of the page. They recommend an A/B firewire switch available at https://www.signvideo.com/firewire-switch-ieee-1394.htm or an expensive firewire port selector( however the manufacturer no longer offers the device they link to). I have the A/B switch and it works fairly well, but you have to exit FCP to make the switch or it may cause a crash. Also you have to be sure the connectors are firmly seated or FCP won’t see the switch.
