I’m curious to see what happens with mixed resolutions when Apple replaces the PowerPC chip with Intel processor(s). I’m also curious to see how well the new dual and quad core PowerPC processors will sell, especially when you consider that development for PowerPC OS X applications will most likely grind to a halt after Intel is implemented. As much as I’d like the boost in speed over my Dual 2.0, I can see future upgrades to ProApps migrating to Intel only versions. Alas, such is the nature of the beast. When you conform or uprez your sequence you will need to re-render the motion clips. The re-rendered clips should be at the higher resolution. Why don’t you take a minute or so of your sequence and experiment. The FCP documentation says that when working in offline RT, all graphics will be conformed when uprezing. Please let us know how it goes.

I agree with Matte totally on the DV camcorder. It makes more sense over my previous suggestions. However I still suggest some type of phone interface over recording a speakerphone.

There are other options with equal or greater quality than a dictation recorder. Equal quality can be had from an I-Pod with Belkin Voice Recorder Option. Greater quality (up to 96Khz) on the IPod can be achieved by running Linux. Sony has a line of MD (Mini Disc) recorders that I’ve seen some radio reporters using. Wave format is featured and supported by your Mac. https://ipod.hackaday.com/entry/1234000147025394/

Both of these hybrids feature line level output of the caller’s voice so you’ll need an attenuator to go from line to mic level. -
Opps sorry I thought you were responding to my post. I haven’t been on Avid for a while and the system I used is a late 90’s model. “Wrong Format?” that would be bad.

Of course you can mix codecs, but you have to render the clips that don’t match the sequence settings. So if your sequence is set at DV and you have to render clips encoded at DVCPro 50. Other NLE’s such as AVID and Media 100 allow you to mix codecs without rendering.

I would agree with Walter that downconverting when capturing probably beats rendering the the clips to match the sequence settings. It also saves drive space as you won’t have extra render files for all that DVCPro 50 material.
As a side note, If you have clips that don’t match the sequence settings you can play them fairly well if you set the playback for dynamic RT. Don’t forget to turn dynamic RT off when you are ready to output so you can render those clips.

On my system I use the composite out from the IO as the source of sync. That way you sync the desk to the Io which serves as your reference. Others in this forum don’t think it’s the best way to go, but AJA has said it’s fine and I’ve had no probelms with it.
I connect a cable from the Io’s composite out into the deck’s reference in. If you aren’t using the composite out for anything else simply terminate at the deck. If you need it elsewhere leave the deck’s termination off and terminate at the next device. Be sure the Io control panel is set to free run.
