  • Analog Audio in Control Panel

In the “Control” tab of the AJA Control Panel, there is a box called “Analog Audio Level”. There are 2 choices: “+18 dBu FSD” or “+24 dBu FSD.”

    1. What do these settings mean?
    2. What is “dBu FSD?”
    3. What should I have it set to, in which circumstances?

    My system:

    Dual G4 1.42 GHz
    2 GB RAM
    OS 10.3.9
    FCP 4.5
    QT Pro 6.5.2
    Compressor 1.2.1
AJA Io with Driver v2.0 and Firmware Update v23-28
AJA ProIO Control Panel v 1.0.0
    Uncompressed 8-bit 4:2:2 via SDI to/from DVW-A500

FSD refers to Full Scale Digital. According to Wikipedia it is “The maximum amplitude a digital system can represent.” They go on to say “Once a signal has reached full scale all headroom has been utilized, and any further increase in gain results in an error known as clipping.” I would imagine that most decks and small mixers would conform to the 18dbu FSD specification. If you hear distortions on peaks then you can try the 24dbu FSD setting.

On Wikipedia they talk about FSD in regards to digital audio. But the place on the Io Control Panel that I see this setting is in the area called “Analog Audio Level”. Does that mean that you can set the analog output level to be the equivalent of a digital audio setting with 18 dBu of head room or 24 dBu of head room? Does that make sense?

What is the difference between dBu and dB?

It makes sense to me because although you’re bringing the audio in via analog, it has to eventually go through the Io

Your are welcome massachi. I also learned something myself as I did not know what FSD and dbu referred to until I looked it up.
