  • Mixing DVCPRO 50 and DigiBeta footage with Io

Posted by Michael Rogers on August 31, 2005 at 8:11 pm

I’ve got a project coming up which we will have DVCPRO 50 footage shot at 24p and editing it with footage from DigiBeta which was downconverted from Sony HD 24p. We will be outputing to DigiBeta.

We are using AJA Io, I was planning on bringing the DigiBeta in SDI.
What is the best way to bring in the DVCPRO 50 footage? We will be renting a DVCPRO 50 deck for digitizing.

    Thanks for any input,
    Michael

Of course if the DVCPro 50 deck has the SDI output option you’ll want to do that. The SDI card transcodes from DV50 to SDI. Otherwise you will have to settle for component analog which will still look good. I would choose the 8 or 10 bit uncompressed setting in FCP for this project. Once loaded into FCP the original format is irrelevant as long as you captured both DV50 and SDI at the same settings. I don’t have any experience with 24p so I can’t say how it will work.

Thanks. I usually bring in all my footage Component or SDI if possible. I had heard that it was better to bring DV/ DVCAM/ DVCPRO footage in firewire to gain the most out of it. However since I mix formats often I find that if I bring in the footage as DV then I’ll have to render it on the timeline and convert it anyway.

I guess the question will be how the DVCPRO 50 handles the 24p. If it downconverts out the analog or SDI outputs, if available, then I’m all set with Uncompressed 10-bit.

I ALWAYS bring in ANY DV/DVCAM/DIGIBETA/DVCPRO footage in SDI. It is the only way to work if you plan to do any titling, color correction, compositing or basically anything except a straight cuts only DV timeline!!

Bring in both via SDI and capture (for final) as 8-bit uncompressed, unless you have fast enough drives for 10-bit. Both media will be 23.98fps with 2-3 pulldown, so 29.97, like a film transfer master. Capture and edit at 29.97fps (59.94) and put back out to DBeta as SDI. This will be regular 29.97 NTSC video just the same as if it had been shot on film. This workflow is for TV/Video presentation and not for going back to film, since you will have mixed 2-3 pulldown cadence at the edit points. This is normal for video, but undesireable for a tape-to-film transfer.

    Sincerely,
    Oliver

I believe the program is to be played back on DigiBeta so this workflow sounds perfect.

    Thanks for your response,
