I’ve found no solution or workaround. I re-installed 8.0c, running on Vista 64, to handle rendering of 8.1 projects. As a result, I’m starting less projects with 8.1. I wasn’t aware that the problem extended to .avi files. My first guess was that the problem was related to the mainconcept mpeg encoder. Seeing how avi files are affected, I’m not so sure anymore.

I guess it’s a bug related to the first release of a new product. You have to ask yourself, how such an essential function of this editing software could get by testing and still be released?

Or… perhaps it’s just us and the rest of the world is using 8.1 and rendering without the issues you and I are experiencing. Except for your confirmation of the problem, I’ve gotten no response to my original post.

A method I have used to display the actual tape timecode in a window over the media for “client copies”, Is to use TOOLS/ SCRIPTING / ADD TIMECODE TO ALL MEDIA.

Be sure to have OPTIONS / PREFERENCES / VIDEO / SHOW SOURCE FRAME NUMBERS ON EVENT THUMBNAILS AS [drop down] TIMECODE

After dragging all your captured media to timeline and burning a timecoded DVD or whatever, just go back to TOOLS/ SCRIPTING / REMOVE TIMECODE FROM ALL MEDIA.

Thanks for following up. Same problem with 8.1 I’ve confirmed. In the meantime, I’ll just use the folder I’m stuck with then move and rename the files after the rendering.

One other detail. My edit4 computer uses the default folder in the C drive/User/Vegas/Pro/… My edit2 computer uses a folder and file name from a previous render on another project. Neither can be changed. How weird is that?

John, thanks for the reply. I’m baffeled. It isn’t the file size or lack of space. I have 2 computers side by side and the same results on both. Just tired again with a 1 minute selection loop region, very small file size. No luck. here’s the step by step precedure I’m using.

1. place clip to be burned to bluray on timeline.
2. select entire clip by placing all in Loop region (84 mins.)
3. tools/burn disk/blu-ray disk/
4. OPERATION – render image only
5. RENDER PARAMETERS – Sony AVC, Blu-Ray 1920×1080-60i, AC-3, render loop region only
6. IMAGE PARAMETERS – FILE PATH – click browse, create new folder on drive other than media drive, type file name, click save…

At this point the file path remains unchanged from the path I tried to change,

I get the same results on both computers.

I have no problem rendering files to folders I select and files names I type in. Only in the Blu_ray disk burning do I see the issue.

Both computers function as expected when I render files such as wmv, or mpg2 files. No problem assigning folders and file names. This is strange. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks to everyone for helping me thru this. The solution was, as always, simple and it’s in the book. I now have a much better understanding of Vegas 8.

thanks, but I’m not sure that it isn’t rebuilding everytime I open the project. However most of the time I am reopening the project after a crash. Overall 8.1 has not been a good experience. The extra RAM (8gig) is very important and is helpful but the software has been pretty shakey overall, peak rebuilding aside. I haven’t given up and maybe there are answers to some of my problems. I elaborate in future posts.

I have installed 8.1, 64 bit, and have the same problem.. Never noticed it before in 8.0b.

You mentioned that you had used Vegas 7. Is this Vegas 7 Movie Studio or Vegas 7? If you were using Vegas 7 the upgrade path should have been to Vegas 8 PRO.

My Vista 64 bit Home Premium edition will not install if any Hard Drive in my system fails to meet its criteria. I disabled my RAID and the install went smoothly to a clean SATA drive.

Vegas 8.1 seem to perform nicely on HDV projects and HI RES pan and scan photos even before my upgrade to 8 gig ram.

However…

I now learn that no “home edition” of vista will recognize a dynamic disk drive so my striped RAID is useless. I will need to acquire a Vista 64 bit business edition and reinstall.

I wonder if disabling my RAID will be necessary when I install the 64 bit Business edition?

time will tell…
