Hi, Im a amateur editor =P.

I had Sony Vegas 7, and I used it to mix my videos with music, yesterday I purchased Sony Vegas 9 and when I tried to import my videos they wouldnt play, just can hear the sound. They are not AVI, they are mpg-4 (mp4). The amazing part is that some of them will actually play, while other do not, they are a bunch, around 50-60mb.
Im not a pro but i have edited same videos alright.

In the lower part the ones that wont play say: “stream attributtes coulnt be determined”. Please give me a hand over here, i now i can do it without converting them to another format.

Vegas Movie Studio doesn’t support MP4 to the timeline.

    Dante,
There are myriad encoders for mp4. you can download a codec pack from a variety of places, and it’s possible that your ‘brand’ of mp4 might play, or not. If they’re created in DivX, for example, they might be in an mp4 container, but they won’t play in Movie Studio.
Like most codec containers, there can be a variety of encoding tools that aren’t readable in a lot of different NLE or reader tools. No fun, but there it is.
You might use Gspot to determine the encoding and that may lead you to finding a decoder that will allow Vegas to read the file.
If you have Quicktime Pro installed, it might allow Vegas Movie Studio to read the file.

You might be able to use Super to translate the video into something that will play on the time line.

You mentioned that you had used Vegas 7. Is this Vegas 7 Movie Studio or Vegas 7? If you were using Vegas 7 the upgrade path should have been to Vegas 8 PRO.

    Supported File Formats
Opens: AA3, AAC, AAF, AIF, ASF, AU, AVI, BMP, BWF, CDA, DIG, DLX, DV, FLAC, GIF, IVC, JPG, M2T, M2TS, MTS, MOV, Sony MXF, MP3, MP4, M4A, MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 video, MPEG-4, OGG, OMA, PCA, PNG, PSD, QT, SFA, SND, SWF,* TIFF, TGA, TS, VOX, W64, WAV, WMA, WMV.

    It can be confusing.

    Dante,

I know all of this can be confusing and actually not make sense some times so let me try and summarize what Douglas and the others have been trying to tell you and then reiterate the steps they’ve told you to take:

MPEG-4 has several variations so all mp4 files are not alike. What is worse (and may not make sense to you) is that Vegas Movie Studio can generate mp4 files that it cannot edit! That’s because some formats are better for delivery while others are better for editing.

Lesson 1: Always keep your source files!

Douglas suggested that you get a copy of GSpot. You can open the mp4 files in GSpot and it will tell you what codec it uses and whether or not you have the codec installed. If you don’t have the codec installed the file will never play.

Harold suggested that you download Super (C). This will allow you to re-encode your mp4 files into a format that Vegas Movie Studio can edit. That is your best path to editing these files again.

One thing that was confusing in your thread is you calling Vegas Movie Studio just Vegas 7 or Vegas 9. The PRO versions are simply called Vegas. You have the Movie Studio version and it is important that you say that when asking for help otherwise people may tell you things that aren’t possible on your version of Movie Studio (like Movie Studio can’t edit mp4 on the timeline while the full Vegas can).

So do as Douglas and Harold suggested and you should be editing again in no time.
