compositing question
Posted by Larry Brewer on September 24, 2008 at 7:24 pmI am trying to layer a project using the compositing mode on Vegas 8. I have a white moving image on a black background. I need to use it to cut out a scene from background A and superimpose it onto background B. Should be simple.
Cutting out the image the shape of the moving matt is straight forward. I just can’t make the black part of the moving matt transparent to show background B. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks

September 25, 2008 at 8:05 amcould try the masks in compositing mode:
– B&W image on top track, and mask composite mode
– fill video on 2nd track, made to be child
– background video on 3rd track
look here for demo (using text): https://www.upload2world.com/pic98/upload2world_b5773.png

September 25, 2008 at 11:59 amIt sounds like what you might be doing wrong is not using the Sony Mask Generator on the mask track. Your tracks should be laid out top to bottom as: Mask track (top), background A (middle), background B (bottom).
Then follow these steps:
- Change the Compositing Mode of the Mask track to Multiply (Mask). This will make background A show through the white part of the mask.
- Add a Sony Mask Generator as an FX on the Mask track and make sure it’s set to Luminance (the default)
- Press the Make Compositing Child button on the background A track to make it a child of the Mask track.
Background track B should now show through where there is black on the mask track. Most people forget about adding the Mask Generator. This is the crucial step.

September 27, 2008 at 4:49 amThanks to everyone for helping me thru this. The solution was, as always, simple and it’s in the book. I now have a much better understanding of Vegas 8.

October 7, 2008 at 4:14 pmI found this interesting (and useful), although I personally have had some success with masking and completely forgot the “mask generator” existed. Which leads to a couple of basic masking questions:
1) How is “transparency” treated (vs. black) on the mask track? Since I tend to use white/transparent masks, is that how I’m getting away with no mask generator?
2) If a mask has a child track, its effects apply only to that child track. I noticed that if a mask does NOT have a child track, its effects are applied to all lower tracks (they all seem to become default “children”). Is there a way to turn off that behavior?
Thanks,
