You” definitely see a big boost in horsepower with the i7 2600 but you may have an issue with your Waves plug-ins. Most pre-built systems come pre-loaded with Win 7 64bit which is a great OS and allows lots of RAM etc., but I think Waves still requires a 32bit OS. I switched to the iZotope plugs since they are similar quality but fully 64bit! Waitng for Waves to be updated…

The Adobe PPro team seem to be responding well while they have this window that Apple has opened for them. I was a beta tester from 1.0 to CS3 and it was a horrible experience. They wouldn’t listen to anyone and had no one on staff who had pro broadcast or feature film experience who could discern real requests from lame ones – I gave up on PPro but always hoped they would wake up and make it a real pro app since After Effects and Photoshop are both great and industry standards.

You can download fully functional demos of PPro 5.5 and MC 5.5 and play with ’em yourself. I do think FCP editors will adapt to PPro within monutes while it will take weeks to fully get MC. Really depends on the work you do – I don’t know anyone delivering a broadcast show on a regular basis in PPro, while FCP and MC have no probs.

The 5750 is not available in the i7 iMac. Avid always seems to be a generation or two behind in their specs. The 6870 should work fine as it uses the same drivers as the 5750 – just has way more hardware power. I’d opt for the 2 GB version just to future proof your purchase a bit more.

Good to see Apple fighting back with all the Avid, Adobe and Sony Vegas switches and crossgrade specials. Let’s hope their programmers are working as hard as their marketing dept. to fix the many missing “pro” features…

I would stay away from the built-in fx – the Adobe 3-way corrector is easily the worst plug-in ever devised by man, followed closely by the Fast corrector.
Red Giant Software’s Magic Bullet is a great suite of plug-ins. Their new Looks 2 plug-in has pretty much everything you’d need this side of a Resolve system for a reasonable price.

Apple could dump the remaining “pro apps and tell every pro users they never want to see you again and stop buying our stuff and they would never miss us! Look at the quarterly report – they’ve done everything right as a high tech company! They sold almost 4 million Mac’s in the quarter and grossed over $28 billion!
In the last quarter of 2002 – before the iPod/iPhone/iPad, when they were still Apple Computer and they couldn’t survive without us: they sold 734 thousand Macs for the quarter and posted a net loss of $45 million lol! Total annual revenue was $5.7 billion – that’s for the YEAR!
On a positive note – I think FCPX has to get better because Apple now has a much larger audience than ever before and those new converts expect great things from Apple!

I love cruising and always blown away at the pretty high-end studios they have on the ships. I agree though that any NLE that allows you to lock certain tracks like stock music and titles in place and just insert new footage from that cruise would work. Vegas 10 would actually be way better at the this than FCPX because of the dedicated and nameable tracks that are lacking in FCPX.

I have to agree with you Craig – people, some of them even Cow leaders just hanging around to slam the program while talking about the big switch to Premiere Pro! So leave already! And if you’re really serious then you better be launching PPro on a Win7 machine! Thinking “I’ll show Apple!” and opening up PPro on your Mac won’t hurt Apple a bit – you’ll probably need to upgrade in a big way to get the most out of the software too. And when you discover how truly crappy PPro is don’t come crying back here… go over to the Avid forum and join them! Lol….
