Nice post Jim. Are you using the built-in color tools in X or plug-ins or sending out for timing? I actually really like the new colot tools in X and find it so much more fun to use than 3-wheel style correctors. And no I’m not a consumer, been doing this for 25 years now… 🙂

I would pay the little extra and get the i7 2600 as a min. Also go for at least the GTX570 for full Mercury support in PPro.

Who cares if HP stops making PCs? It will have no effect whatsoever on the PC editing world. Dell will be happy and Avid and Adobe will have to qualify some new machines that’s all.
I have 2 high-end custom boxes that I built and both run Avid, Adobe and Sony apps perfectly along with AJA hardware. Don’t care about Blackmagic because they’ve always had driver and reliability issues when trying to deliver a broadcast show every week.
My PCs aren’t as pretty as my 2 Intel Macs but they’re getting used a lot more since Apple abandoned the NLE market.
PS – Is Craig Seeman the biggest pest in the history of the Cow or what? FCPX will NEVER be widely adapted in the pro world – it’s complete crap.

Since you’re looking at PC’s I hope you’re also looking at Sony Vegas – the FIRST 64bit NLE that shipped and far more powerful, faster, more customizable and easier to use than Avid or PPro.

I would really recommend you take another look at After Effects. If you’re serious about serious fx you’ll need a program with tracking and match moving etc. You can do some pretty nice compositing in Vegas but nothing like you can do in a dedicated compositing program. Plus the 3rd party plug-in support for AE for FX work is endless.

Probably fine for audio – I’m working with HD video so I need all the RAM I can get. But I do go back to the 32bit version for certain plug-ins like Waves on an older XP system. You’ll still get the same power from the i7 so no worries there – the only issue is making sure you can buy a new computer with Win7 32bit – may have to custom order that.

Doesn’t have to be in Thumbnail view – just click on the clip you want to alter and the thumbnail will appear at the top of the bin – from there you can scrub or play to the frame you want and as Joseph says “righ-click” and set poster frame or click the little camera icon above the play button.

Premiere Pro uses a default label color system based on file type and not really usage like you want. In FCP for instance you can give any clip a color and it will show up in the bin and on the timeline – not so in PPro. I have tested this in MC 5.5 and also Vegas 10 but no NLE seems to allow custom color on a per clip basis like good ole FCP – could be wrong here.
Vegas 10 would be closest in that it uses an active Media Pool which shows everything on the timeline in various views (List, Thumbnails, Details). Vegas’ Regions and Markers and Subclipping are much easier to see and work with than other NLE’s which could help in your situation but that means leaving the Mac…
