Can serious FX work be done in Vegas?
Posted by Mike Thomas on August 5, 2011 at 9:56 pmI’m using Vegas 10 and want to start learning how to do FX stuff such as: adding fire and smoke, explosions, adding things into the footage such as signs, photos, etc.
I’ve looked at a lot of the stuff posted on youtube and most of it looks cheesy at best. Is this because it’s just kids playing around or because it’s not possible to do real-looking FX in Vegas?
I have no interest in learning Adobe AE unless I have to. Any thoughts?

August 5, 2011 at 10:21 pmBy itself, no.
But you can run Boris Continuum, GenArts Sapphire Edge and New Blue FX in Vegas. I am petty sure that there is a “Particles” unit for BCC7.Steve Mann

August 5, 2011 at 10:40 pmThanks for the info Steve. I’m reading up on these programs now. So…are you familiar with all of the softwares that you can give me a sort of “pros/cons” list for all of them? Which of these programs are you using?

August 6, 2011 at 12:15 amYou can use other add ins like Video Copilots “Action Essentials: 2.” I just used it on my short Zombie film in After Effects and also in Vegas. It has explosions and smoke and such. Not generated from Vegas, but applied in it. Sorry if that is not exactly what your question was asking or if I am repeating things.
Vegas really isn’t meant for FX by itself. That’s where I would say you need a compositing tool like Boris as mentioned by Stephen or After Effects.
I’m an After Effects user, but I have heard good things about Boris too. Have you tried download a demo from both and trying them out? I compose my timeline in Vegas. Then render or EDL the section out for use in After Effects. Do my work there, and then reinsert the new clip/section with the FX.

August 6, 2011 at 12:20 amI just downloaded the free trial for Saphire Edge. I’ve been using Vegas for a number of years but I’ve not even touched the compositing stuff yet.
So you’re saying that Boris is more of a compositing software similiar to After Effects? Saphire seems to be mostly color and transition effects but I’m in need of those sorts of tools too which is why I downloaded it.

August 6, 2011 at 3:49 amBoris can do a lot of things, but from my stand point, Boris and After Effects are similar tools. One advantage that Boris has over After Effects is that you can do a number of things inside Vegas with it where After Effects is total solo.
