March 11, 2020 at 8:53 am in reply to: NAB Cancellation Thread: From Adobe, AJA, and Avid to Zaxcom. And of course NAB themselves!I was just in Vegas this past weekend, expected it to be a ghost town but it was PACKED! Had a great time and was planning on NAB as a friend who has never been was hoping to go. I assumed after SXSW cancellation that NAB would be next, sadly the panic is too great and the media isn’t helping but probably for the best as the A-list companies are folding like dominos… next year hopefully.

Looks nice but pretty close to iMac Pro pricing – just $750 more for similar base iMac vs iMac Pro??? (32GB ram and 1TB SSD)

I talked to the Apple dept guy on friday at the Tustin store – they have dozens in stock and mostly selling to Hollywood post folks making the drive down to save a grand. It’s a special deal between Microcenter and Apple that I haven’ seen anywhere else. You also can ad regular iMac Applecare for under $200 which is just a crazy deal.
No I didn’t get one but it was the frist time I’ve seen the iMac Pro in person and it’s cooler than I thought – yes I want one!

If you serious about getting the base iMac Pro check out Microcenter – they have a crazy deal right now if you go into their store – $3999!

I don’t think FCP would have the following it does or Apple have the fanbase it enjoys if it hadn’t been for their participation and massive booth at NAB for many years. My first NAB was in ’99 when FCP 1 was launched and I was instantly a fan. At the time NLE’s were still hardware dependent and cost tens of thousands of $$$ but FCP came along at $999 I think and blew everyone away. Once the South Hall was completed Apple was the star of NAB with the biggest prime spot including massive theater and a training area where you could learn the entire pro suite for free. It was sad the first year Apple didn’t show and broke the heart of a lot of users and NAB goers. But they made a decision to bail on ALL trade shows – even Macworld and it hasn’t hurt their bottom line.

Hey Bob no I was being kind of a wise ass with this post. Everyone’s so excited to run out and buy a $13,000 iMac I thought it was kinda funny that nVidia launches a $2999 card that literally 5 to 10 times more powerful than the most expensive iMac!
I would never even think of throwing one of these into a Thunderbolt box – just plain silly.
Happy Holidays!

I wonder what kind of speed boost I’d get adding this (10 times more powerful than the Vega):

If you want to run the same Adobe apps on both machines the Surface is the only option – iPad is iOS and can’t run anything other than Lightroom.
You can use your iCloud account to easily move your Adobe projects back and forth from iMac to Surface. I do this with my PC workstation and MacBook Pro. I maintain the same font library and brush library on both so design and Photoshop are the same.
You can also buy MacDrive for your Surface so you can move drives back and forth and use normally on both.
Really depends on what you want to do on each machine but you can’t compare the iPad Pro to a Surface Pro – we have both and they’re both great but only the Surface will allow you to use real apps from Adobe etc.

That article is 6 months old and the build choices were not very smart – for instance there would be no reason to choose a SSD instead of an M.2 drive – you can get the Samsung EVO 960 M.2 for under $200 and it will give you the same drive speed the iMac is getting probably because it’s the same thing inside the Apple?
Also the 5K monitor on the iMac isn’t really 5K – the same monitor on the current 2017 iMac runs native and QHD not 5K! In fact you can’t even crank it to 4K!
But who cares – I still want an iMac Pro!
