Hey Bob I’m hip I’m hip… I’m replying to this on my Win10 workstation which I use for Capture One and Photoshop because it’s so much faster than my Macbook Pro. It’s silly that Apple thinks we need/want a Xeon machine when there’s all the great i7 and i8 multicore CPU’s out there.

I love editing with FCPX and I need Pro Res deliverables so I will keep my MAcbook handy – I have an adpater that let’s me output to my Sony UHD monitor at 60hz so all good for the occasional post gig.

Yes the Apple site says XEON 8, 10 or 16 core but not dual like was said above I think. Also ECC ram which I don’t think runs on an i7? I think you’re right very few will ever order a maxed iMac Pro…

I concur Oliver – the base iMac Pro is only around $1600 more than a similar config iMac so a relative bargain. But beyond that I’m not sure who would buy a maxed out iMac Pro? It would be overkill for most editing gigs and inadequate for CG effects, animation, compositing etc compared to a maxed out HP or Dell. It’s still only a SINGLE XEON!

I would rather see a 6 or 8 core option for the current iMac which at street prices is just a few hundred dollars. There is little need for ECC memory or Xeons for editing or Photoshop. So just not sure who the “Pro” is that Apple is targeting? I have friends at Dreamworks and they are not going to abandon their dual Xeon Quadro 6000 workstations for an iMac Pro.

The $1400 PC that started the thread is more than enough for most editing gigs BUT it can’t run FCPX or render out a Pro Res file so sadly useless to me. I would much rather but;ld and 8 core PC with Samsung m.2 drive and Quadro card but my clients need Pro Res 🙁

I like the new color wheels! Best and easiest I’ve ever used are in Capture One Pro 10 which is a stills app. Now finally in an NLE…

I agree as far as software cost – their all pretty cheap these days. But it’s surprising how archaic Hollywood still is – it’s a CYA fear-driven town so putting Avid rentals in a budget at whatever per week times let’s say 12 weeks for an indie would still be the norm for a Producer who’d never worked on sub $1million show before.

But my reasons for using FCPX for certain things is not cost – it’s the fact that it has specific capabilities that no other NLE or DAW has…

Sounds like the show was probably set up with a traditional post workflow which may have included weekly Avid system rentals etc. So a Producer who had never worked on a real Indie would naturally freak out seeing their show cut on a laptop with $300 software. I’ve delivered several feature films now via FCPX and must say if every Editor in Hollywood (where FCPX still has the stigma from its disastrous roll-out) knew what I know about the depth of the program they wouldn’t use anything else – mainly because there is no other NLE with the picture and sound capabilities of FCPX. And when it comes time to deliver a master with 16 tracks of audio according to studio specs it’s easy peezy.

Apple always seems to go the expensive is better route. You can build a screaming 8 core AMD workstation right now for under 2 grand. i7 or Ryzen iMac or Mac Pro built around a GTX 1080 or whatever AMD comes out next with would be awesome. But wasting money on ECC RAM and XEON CPU’s and Quadro GPU’s is just stooopid.

A Xeon. ECC based iMac… starting at what 6 grand? There’s no reason for a Xeon ECC machine for anything other than high-end CG, CAD and scientific crap. A 10 core i7 as a top choice would be more than enough horsepower…

I had to check the date of the original post – I thought I had lost it for a moment. Maybe someone will post if I can use my Digisuite with FCPX to capture from my XL1?
