+2! Literally the only thing keeping me on Mac. Although I like cutting with FCPX and have a ton of investment in 3rd party tools for it I hate seeing all the new tech out there and not being able to use it! The GTX1080 and now Gen7 Intel CPU’s not to mention M.2 drives, Thunderbolt 3 etc etc…
I’ve got my 12 core 2012 MacPro souped up as far as it will go – literally – and it’s not enough to finish 4K shows in a smooth, real-time way. As far as ProRes, I’ve though about switching back to DNxHD and then keeping a cheap Mac around to render deliverables. Or subscribe to Scratch but that’s $69 per month just to render ProRes in Windows…
even if Apple releases a mind blowing Mac Pro in 2017 it’s not going to be cheap. For $3500 you can build an up-to-the-second dream machine in the Windows world that would blow away anything from Apple if they stick with AMD. I’m not an Avid user anymore and never plan to be so I have to decide if Premiere/Resolve combo will make me forget about FCPX…
Happy New Year

November 7, 2016 at 3:52 pm in reply to: So has the 10.3 Update calmed your fears on the Future of FCPX?I think you’re being overly pessimistic Oliver. I don’t really care if Apple kills FCPX, but for now it’s my NLE of choice and my favorite NLE by far. If Apple pulled the plug I’d be cool moving to Windows and Premiere/Resolve and finally in a hardware world that I have some control over. Apple had no problem updating and then killing off Shake, which was the gold-standard for compositing at the time. So anythings possible.
But I think this is a substantial update, the way roles self-organize on the timeline is insane and something no other NLE maker has probably even thought of and honestly substantial enough that I would have paid for the upgrade. I’ve seen much more positive progress since the release of X in 2011 than anything Adobe or Avid has done. Resolve is looking stronger all the time but still not, for me, as good as X when it come to editing. As far as performance improvements. I agree with Steve, I find it much improved with a big (feature length) timeline – 4K 444XQ – no sweat!
Wondering what they’ll do next…

Have you messed around when sharing Master File? For audio choose Multitrack Quicktime Movie and you can easily send roles out as anything you want. Just for fun I just created a 16 track QT file with random roles as 5.1, stereo, mono in totally random order to create a mess and it all came through exactly as I shared it showing a total of 16 tracks with 2 5.1’s i stereo and 2 mono. The tracks have the role name so you could easily create a Project with lanes for specific roles in whatever order you needed for deliveralbes. Maybe I’m crazy but seems pretty easy and cool!

I jumped off the cliff in the middle of a feature film laughing in the face of danger and loving it! Of course I had another Mac Pro standing by with 10.23 and the entire project just in case….

Apple doesn’t do booths at any tradeshows anymore as a corporate policy – this was before Steve passed. They always have a presence at NAB, you just have to know where to look or be a big enough player that they look for you 🙂

October 30, 2016 at 7:50 pm in reply to: What would Walter Murch think of FCPX 10.3?I would think he would “get it” – being as much a sound designer as an Editor, I’ve never been happier with a timeline as I am with this new version. Hopefully he’ll take another look, though the only way to fully “get” FCPX is to start and finish a real gig with it – fiddling around is useless.

October 30, 2016 at 7:47 pm in reply to: Interesting to see who is ready for Thunderbolt 3Nice article Noah! Looks like a great time to be in the adapter business. To think I was pondering going 100% Adobe on the PC just to have more hardware choices. After this update to both FCPX (loving it) and the MBPro I’m so happy I waited…

So my Rec. 2020 button is greyed out even though I have a Radeon R9 280x – guess it’s not new enough. Both my monitors are 4K Rec.2020 capable 🙁

Thing is the new Touch Bar makes FCPX even faster with all the menus and buttons coming and going. How do we get that functionality on another Mac? Apple Touch Bar keyboard for iMac?
Truth is the new Macbook Pro, with the right drive array etc, may be enough to edit just about anything in the Pro Res realm…
