  • New windows system – to build or not to build

Posted by Mike Cohen on December 1, 2011 at 10:45 pm

Our Core2duo quad system is showing signs of dismay with CS5.5
(daily crashes of Premiere, not responding errors, crashes during export, real-time playback jitters (HDV/MP4 (Canon 7d or AF100)), and depending upon the project hourly crashes of Premiere with basic usage.

    (8gig ram, 9600 GT PSU, Win7 64 bit, HD Element RAID5 4TB)

I’m thinking a new system might be an improvement, although it is hard to definitively say if any one component is to blame – the replacement of which might improve performance.

    Here’s what I’m thinking:

ASUS P8Z68-V PRO/GEN3 LGA 1155 Intel Z68 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard with UEFI BIOS

    Intel Core i5-2500K Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz (3.7GHz Turbo Boost) LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core

ASUS ENGTX560 TI DCII TOP/2DI/1GD5 GeForce GTX 560 Ti (Fermi) 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card

CORSAIR Enthusiast Series TX650 V2 650W ATX12V v2.31/ EPS12V v2.92 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC High Performance Power Supply

    CORSAIR XMS3 16GB (4 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 Desktop Memory Model CMX16GX3M4A1333C9

Too bad you can’t get more than 16 gigs ram in this motherboard.

    ________

I know these hardware related threads are subject to opinion, but I trust the opinions here on the COW more than other sites.

Thanks for any ideas you may have

Call a company called ADK maybe they can give you good feedback as well.

I see quite a few HP zSeries workstation chassis for sale at pretty good prices on e*ay. I’m thinking you could get a base unit, then go for the configuration of components that’s suggested on the various sites above, possibly for a lot less than one of the tricked out units with 99GB of RAM.

Yeah, I’ve found that I always want the option to add more ram, so I would definitely leave room to step up – that’ll really increase the life of the comp.

Also, there is no excuse not to get an nVidia card with CUDA acceleration. That is what is so revolutionary about 5.x, is the CUDA. It really is as great as it sounds. If you spend money on another graphics card, you’re seriously dumb. It’s worth even taking a step down in processor speed to step up in a GPU.

I have a Mac Pro and an HP. I’m very happy with both. It seems if you go with the i7 quad or 8 core, with most off the shelf configurations, you don’t have to spend a ton of money anymore to get performance. You can upgrade the graphics card and max out the memory and your good to go.

    Hi Mike,

Don’t skimp on the processor – definitely go with the i7 over the i5. The GTX 560 will work, just apply the “Studio 1 Hack” so that the Mercury Playback Engine will use it though. Of course if the budget allows, you may want to get an Adobe-approved Nvidia GPU for best results.

Your current hardware is definitely not up to the task for HD editing.

I would pay the little extra and get the i7 2600 as a min. Also go for at least the GTX570 for full Mercury support in PPro.
