I don’t know about past versions but there is certainly nothing to get excited about in the current version – it’s no Resolve or Color for that matter. I think if I was to use Premiere full time I’d probably rely on Colorista or Looks and take pass on Speedgrade.

Yes I’m talking about grouping – not nesting or making a compound clip. Vegas has had this for over 10 years and I use it all the time – Adobe just added this to CS6. Additionally in Vegas you can select a cup or group of clips and ungroup them or maker a smaller group. It’ also quick to highlight the group and ungroup when no longer needed.
As far as locking clips in place I use this as a temperory thing when I’, working on a particular section of a cut or when sound designing – I’ll often lock picture and dialog then begin sound design etc.
These are simple features to ad to the right-click menu and just give Editors another option – no one is required to use them.

The Blackmagic Cinema Camera is going to be a HUGE seller (it was already back-ordeded over 1,000 units during NAB) so I would imagine there will be a way to cut the RAW shots in Vegas – though like Angelo says the files will be huge. I would think it you’d want to transcode the files into something Vegas friendly for editing since the files will have a non-standard frame size in RAW mode. Of course you can shoot in 1080p in either ProRES or DNxHD and Vegas can read both formats.
I think the low-light performance looks really good with the camera and more like an Alexa or RED than a current DSLR. This means if you know how to shoot and light a scene you’ll get great results – if you want to shoot scenes in dark alleys with no added lights this camera and maybe this industry may not be for you 🙂

This brings up a BIG feature request for me that would help a lot in these scenarios. I just helped my wife cut a 4 min. wedding sizzle for her best friend and the lack of track locks drove me nuts. I’m used to not having track locks since normally I would use Sony Vegas for these types of cuts – but with Vegas I can right-click on any clip – audio, video, still and select “LOCK”. This will lock the media in place until i unlock it. I can also highlight a group of clips and LOCK them or even GROUP them so they stay together.
The LOCK and GROUP features would be awesome to have in FCPX and ease the pain of not having actual tracks. For instance once you have your music edited you can then LOCK it in place and cut away with or without the magnetic timeline – this makes it easy to cut to music similar to locking a track in FCP7. Actually the GROUP/UNGROUP feature is now just a right-click away in Premiere CS6 – something Vegas has had for over a decade…

Wow that’s quite the laptop! Good to hear about Win8 – I haven’t tried it yet but have no issues with Win7. Now Vista, nothing can be that bad!

That’s when I first used it too. Back in 2000 i think , I saw a Vegas 2 demo at the DV Expo in Long Beach and was really freaked out. Vegas was the first NLE to have realtime dissolves etc with DV footage – no Targa or Digisuite or CineWave required!
I ended up buying my copy at Frys and have used it off and on ever since and been on the beta team since version 3. I got to fly back to Sonic Foundry HQ in Madison and meet the team before the Sony purchase. Very cool and creative group. They were the first Windows guys I ever met that were as passionate as Mac folks.

It’s really a love/hate relationship with Vegas lol. But it truly is the only NLE that gives you picture editing and the power of Pro Tools all in the same timeline. This works well for the indie features I cut because I like to sound design and cut in score as I edit. I’ve had a 90 min. 1080p timeline with over 60 tracks of 5.1 audio going with no slow down. Plus I get to use plug-ins like WAVES and isotope while I cut and mix. It also has a great secondary color correction tool.
The ONLY reason I’ve kept a PC’s around for the past decade is Vegas. Even shows I’ve cut in FCP or Avid I’ve done the mix in Vegas. Version 11 has been very problematic – just take a peek at the Vegas forum and you’ll see all the posts. This has been the main reason why I continue to support and test NLE’s like FCPX and Premiere. But I’m hoping they get the bugs fixed and as a beta tester I can say there is hope, lots of it.
Vegas was the first full 64bit NLE. The first to support native RED 4k files and one of the first to offer true stereoscopic editng. 3rd party plugs by Boris,Red Giant, New Blue and GenArts are fully supported. It also supports realtime playback via the widest array of graphics cards from both ATI and nVidia! Matrox, AJA and BMD cards are supported.
It has it’s problems and it’s a weird interface for the uninitiated but it never fails to blow away everyone who sits down with me for a session or a demo…

It’s the graphics card for sure – i tested CS 5.5 with a GTX 570 (on Win7) and perfromance was awesome.

Who are “most people”? One guy with a YouTube video? I just reported my simple test, I think I have enough years doing this to post my results. There are always those who want what they choose to work and be the best, and most folks will come to a place of comfort with their workflow and even defend it if need be. I try to remain objective but of course have my own idiosyncrasies.
Even with all the bugs in Sony Vegas 11, I still think it’s a far better NLE than Premiere or FCPX in most ways, not all ways, just most ways 🙂
